Blushh

Los Angeles band Blushh released their new EP “Thx 4 Asking” on June 15th.

Entirely written by lead member Shab Ferdowsi, the 5 track EP describes her stories and feelings as a 25 year old girl.

“I worked with the same duo who produced my first EP at Hotel London. Yianni Anastos - Prastacos and Arieh Berl have been key teammates in helping me give my acoustic demos to a grungier, heavier life. Arieh was also my lead guitarist for over a year, which helped a lot in the recording process since we knew what the band’s live energy felt like, and how the recorded sound could compliment what we do live. (Arieh left Blushh’s live band recently to focus on his own solo project Pink Skies),” says Ferdowsi.

The band is getting ready to go on their first tour, which will start on September 1st in Fresno, California.

Released under Yellow K Records, “Thx 4 Asking” is now available everywhere.

Introduce yourself. Where are you from?

I’m Shab, self-proclaimed hyper creative, born and raised in LA, lover of languages, hummus and ideation.

What’s your story?

After I gradated college and moved back to my parent’s house, I started throwing shows in my backyard out of boredom and loneliness. This project, Beating Lights, became my life. I started promoting shows at local venues, meeting every local band I could, befriending those who would stick around, going on tours when I got asked to, and booking the tours when I felt up for the challenge. After 3 years though, it started losing its magic. I started writing and performing my own music, and in doing so fell out of love with dealing with  contracts, booking agents, managers, ungrateful artists and the like. Making art gave me a creative satisfaction I’d never felt, so I ran with it. At the end of the day though, I would not be here were it not for the work I did and people I met while working on Beating Lights.  Life comes and goes in waves.

When did you know music was more than just a hobby?

About 5 months ago when I got the masters from my recent EP back ;D

When did you start making music?

I started 3 years ago as a joke, and decided to keep writing more intentionally 2 yeas ago, a few months before officially starting a band and playing our first show.

At what point did you decide to become an artist?

Honestly, I decided to pursue my art (music and photography) this year. I had spent the previous 3 or so years putting so much energy into other artists, doing all kinds of the things on the backend of the music world. It wasn’t until this year, Mach 2018, that I decided I was going to be a little more selfish and pivot that energy into expressing myself more.

What gave you the confidence to form a band?

My friends who helped form my band! I didn’t even have to ask: a few friends offered to join my band when I told them I had started writing music, so I took their offers and decided to start my band. My lineup has changed a good bit since Blushh’ original members, but I still stand by the fact that I would not be here were it not for my friends who pushed me in the right direction in 2016.

How would you define Blushh, the band? What made you want to name the band this way?

Blushh is a garage rock with a fuzz of pop. It’s everything I wish I would say out loud but instead write into songs instead. Truthfully, I chose the name after many pages of word vomiting across many notebooks and pieces of paper. Blush was my final decision, and I added an extra h so people could find me on the internet lol

Tell us about your EP “Tnx 4 Asking”. What’s the story behind this record? How would you describe the sound of it?

I wrote all the songs around the few months surrounding my 25th birthday. The songs are diary entries from a girl going through a lot of internal turmoil that naturally comes with a quarter life crisis. Turning 25 felt like I was jumping into a sea of self-care, self -worth, confidence and resilience. This EP marks that transition and I’d like to think it gives you an image into my angst.

What message do you want to deliver through your music?

YELL IT OUT AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS. Don’t be afraid to speak how you feel. Grab the last cupcake if you want it. Don’t hold back.

What advices would you give to anyone who’d like to work in the music industry?

Kill it with kindness and always send a follow up email.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

"Don’t think too much”.

What does it mean to be an artist?

To me it means expressing myself in any shape or form. I feel like an artist because I turn what’s inside my head and heart into something more outside myself.

Why do you make music, what keeps you motivated?

I spent the first 23 or so years sitting in the corner, too shy to say how I felt, too quiet to make a move. Writing songs makes me feel empowered to take control of my voice, my feelings, my thoughts. When I finish a song I like, I can’t wait to play with my band, then yell it out on stage. I want my audience to move and mosh and yell if they want to. I want them to see me doing what I do, and feel like they can do it too.

Besides make music, what are the things you are passionate about?

I’m passionate about bringing people together, about discovering new cultures, seeing the world as often as life lets me.

What are the things you are the most proud of?

I’m proud of the people in my innermost circles. I’m proud to be surrounded by the best people I know, who fight the good fight, whatever their fight may be.  I’m proud of myself for fighting my own fight too, which these days/years have been simply navigating life with low vision, something I refuse to let stop me from doing the things I want to do.

In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?

A helluva lot more kindness and patience.

What’s your motto?

You can’t fight the waves but you can learn how to surf.

What’s your purpose?

TBD lol
