WOLVES
American band WOLVES unveiled their new single “Freaky” on June 15th.
Formed by Marc Avery, Sean Carney and Rocky Sands, the Los Angeles band introduced their sound through their successful debut single “Animal” released in 2017.
Influenced by the likes of Michael Jackson, the Eagles, Coldplay, the trio reveals their self written/produced pop single entitled “Freaky”. “Freaky” is all about embracing who you are and letting that freak flag fly! Like we sing in the chorus: If you freaky, let it show!”, says Sands.
“Freaky” is now available on all major streaming platforms.
Introduce the band.
Hey, we’re WOLVES! We’re made up of three guys: Marc Avery, Sean Carney, and Rocky Sands. I (Rocky) will be answering these questions!
What’s the band’s story? How did you guys meet?
All three of us actually met a while ago. We were all writing and producing songs for other people and had been trying to crack into the pop songwriting world for a long time. Sean and I met at the ASCAP Expo back in 2014 and stayed friends ever since. I met Marc during a friend’s birthday party at Dave and Buster’s in Hollywood. I was pretty drunk at the time, and he and I randomly got to talking about how we were both songwriters. I don’t know how I remembered, but I texted him the next day and we started writing songs together shortly thereafter. At some point when we were working, he looked at me and said, “Dude…I’ve always wanted to be in a band more than anything.” I confessed to him that I did too, and we decided on the spot to form a band with each other. I knew we needed a third person who could bring the “weird” into the mix, so I called my buddy Sean and the rest, as they say, is history.
When did the band form?
September 2016.
At what point did you realize you had to form a band?
That’s a great question, and it requires a two-part answer. Like I said earlier, we’d all been writing and producing for other people for a while. Even though we had seen some small successes individually, we all instinctively knew that we craved more creative control. When you write for others, your songs are at the mercy of whichever path the artist wants to go—and oftentimes, that path can lead to nowhere. The only way to really put your destiny in your own hands is to create your own project, and the three of us seemed to reach that conclusion all around the same time. That being said, we knew the band we always wanted to be in had to be with EACH OTHER when we got together to co-write for the first time. A lot of co-write situations can be awkward the first time around, like two people on a blind date feeling each other out. But in our case, the synergy was there from the get go. The first song we ever wrote together became our first single ‘Animal’ which went on to garner a lot of airplay on Sirius XM Hits 1 and broke into the Top 40 Billboard Indicator Chart.
How do you complete each other?
The three of us complete each other musically AND personality-wise. Musically, Marc obviously has an incredible voice, and I’ve never worked with a singer who can deliver a song better than he can. He also has an extremely creative ear for melody. Sean brings a technical knowledge to music and theory beyond Marc’s and my understanding. Almost every musical “x factor” in our songs always comes from Sean—those weird things you hear that make you rewind back to it and say, “Huh?!” Personality-wise, Marc is ever the optimist, Sean is the super chill mediator, and I’m seven different kinds of crazy. Something about all those ingredients makes for a pretty fantastic recipe.
How would you define WOLVES?
An ethnically and musically diverse band that writes and produces songs that make you want to dance your pants off and will leave your day a little bit brighter.
Could you tell us about your new single "Freaky”? What’s the story behind this record? Who did you work with?
Like 99% of our songs, “Freaky” was written & produced by the three of us. One day we were in the studio and I came across this crazy vocal chop sample, and started playing what became the song’s lead melody line. Sean laid down the chords underneath it, and we knew we had a little piece of magic on our hands. The song came together pretty fast…I think the whole track and topline were done by the next time we got together. It was kind of like lightning in a bottle, because most WOLVES songs never happen that quickly.
What message do you want to deliver through your music?
We want our music to help make people believe—whether it’s to believe in themselves, in others, in hope, or in love. It’s so important to have belief in the good things, and this world needs more of that now than ever.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Inspiration could come from anywhere at any given moment, but real life always tends to work its way into our music. Falling in love, falling out of love, hoping for better days—these are all things that inspire us to put pen to paper, for sure. We’re obviously also inspired by great music, and there’s a lot of it out there right now. Pretty much anything by J. Cole or Kendrick Lamar gets our gears going pretty good.
How would you define Pop music?
Anything that makes you want to listen twice.
What is your number one goal as a band?
Honestly, we’re a pretty ambitious band. We want to have songs that hit the top of the charts, because we know we can compete with the best of them out there right now. And we want to take our show on the road and play in front of as many people as we possibly can. There, I said it—we’re officially putting it out in the universe in hopes that it comes true! =)
What do you think of the music scene in Los Angeles?
In my opinion, the music scene in LA is a beautiful beast of dichotomy. It’s stuck in the past in some parts and catapulting towards the future in others. It’s simultaneously inspirational and disheartening; inclusive on a familial level, yet as cutthroat as corporate America. It’s got its ups and its downs, but I think everyone here can agree that the highs outweigh the lows, and our collective pursuit of passion makes the juice worth the squeeze. Oh, and it’s entirely over-saturated.
Would you like to recommend any artist(s)?
There’s a ton of artists in our circle who we really love. Our good friend Evalyn is about to drop an awesome second EP and I guarantee you’ll be hearing it all over Spotify & Apple Music in the next few months. She collaborated on the entire thing with our buddy Nicopop, another fantastically talented writer/producer. I also have to give a major shout out to my good buddy Evan Blum, the hardest working songwriter in Hollywood. Look out for him shopping for discounted avocados at any given Whole Foods in West Los Angeles.
Who’s helping you build your career?
We hooked up with our manager Howard Rosen about a year ago, and he’s been instrumental in getting our songs onto the radio. That being said, we’re a pretty tight-knit entity, and the three of us are very much all the co-captains of the WOLVES ship.

In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
More love, plain and simple.
What’s your purpose?
To connect with people. That’s what it’s all about. As Robin Williams’ character Professor Keating so eloquently said in the movie Dead Poets Society: “Medicine, law, business, engineering: these are noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love…these are what we stay alive for.”
