Irish singer/songwriter Fiona Harte revealed her debut single “White Picket Fence” on September 10th.
Influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Carole King, the New York City-based artist is a storyteller who expresses authentic lyrics through emotional vocals.
Written by Harte, “White Picket Fence” is an acoustic folk-pop record that perfectly paints the message she wants to convey.
“It’s about being in love with someone but having the sense to know it isn’t a promising or compromising relationship. The song focuses on how your desired person can control your emotions by doing so little,” says Harte.

My name is Fiona Harte and I am a singer songwriter from Northern Ireland.
What’s your story?
I have been writing songs for years and just last year moved to New York to pursue it. I just released my first single “White Picket Fence” yesterday.
What did you grow up listening to?
I love poetic writers so stuff like Joni Mitchell and Carol King. My parents are big Country fans so a lot of Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash was playing around my house.
Do you remember the first record that had a real impact in your life? Which one was it?
Probably David Gray - “White Ladder”. I still listen to it a lot today – I love the production.
Growing up, what were your favorite records to sing to?
I attempted songs way too big for me, always (laughs). Mariah Carey, Beyonce, all the female belters!
When did you decide to pursue music as a career?
I was in a band with my friends in school and probably decided then that I would pursue it – maybe 15/16 years old.
You recently released your debut single "White Picket Fence”. What’s the story behind this record?
The song focuses on how your desired person can control your emotions by doing so little. Even though the song portrays as sad, the White Picket Fence refers to having hope, perhaps for that love or another.

How does it feel to release your first original music?
It’s been really exciting. I have been hesitant for the longest time as it’s such a personal song for me. Now felt like the right time to release music though and I am really happy with how it’s being received.
What gave you the confidence to release your own music?
I think I just waited so long that I couldn’t wait anymore. I still feel nervous about what people will think but over time I have discovered that as long as I am happy with what I put out then there isn’t much to worry about.
What is your goal for this record?
I would love for people to connect with it. I think the story of the song is something a lot of people could relate to and so I hope it reaches the right people.
You are originally Ireland. What do you think of today’s Irish artists/songwriters? Any favorite Irish singers/songwriters?
Yes I listen to a lot of Irish acts. There’s a singer called Maria Kelly who’s voice I love and also Dermot Kennedy who’s killing it!
You are now based in NYC. What made you move to NYC?
I have always loved the city, I visited when I was 13 and I fell in love with it. I wanted to do more shows and meet more musicians so that really fielded the move. I do miss my friends and family a lot!
What do you like the most about NYC? How does this city affect your musicality?
It’s really inspiring. I love how there’s always something to do and see. There are so many characters here that it gives me a lot to think/write about.
What does music make you feel?
Since moving to New York I have had a lot of time to listen to new music - on trains, at venues etc. It always makes me feel at peace and mostly inspired.
What does songwriting mean to you?
It’s a way to express how I am feeling, always has mean. If I am in a place socially where I need to write and can’t, it’s one of the most frustrating things.
Any upcoming project?
I hope to have a single out before Christmas!
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
No social media – or less emphasis on it.
What’s your purpose?
I want to make music that connects with people. It’s became my main focus more recently. I want to do what I love every day, that’s the goal.
