Introduce yourself. What's your story?
Hello, I am Mimoza. I'm a singer/songwriter who's born in Kosovo, grew up in Sweden & Germany & who's now living in LA making real music about my life experiences.
Tell us a little bit about your childhood. What did you grow up listening to?
I grew up in Sweden. Had the best childhood there. I grew up listening to Swedish pop music, but also Michael Jackson at a very young age. I remember being 5 singing along to "They don't really care about us" and 3 years later understanding what I was actually singing! Because most songs are in English, as a kid you just sing along without really paying attention to the lyrics, but I remember in 4th grade when I started to learn English. I was like "omg, it all makes sense! Haha!"
When did you start singing?
I started singing when I was 6 years old. And I started writing songs in English at the age of 12.
Do you remember the first song you've ever written?
Yes I do! Hahah!! It wasn't very good. It was called "Talk to me".
When did you know you had to become an artist?
When I was 12. I knew I wanted to become a well respected artist. So that's when I knew I had to start writing my own music because all the people I looked up to were all writing their music and that's when I started taking it seriously.
"Love For Days" is your new single. What's the story behind it?
“Love For Days” is my sophomore single & it was a no brainer. I chose it as my 2nd single because it shows my growth as an artist, not only lyrically but vocally as well. I'm very proud of it.
“Love For Days” is a song about that moment you find yourself in when you're both on the verge of falling for each other, but no one has quite let themselves take that step! You both know you are right there, falling in love, but you both need a push just to go for it and surrender yourselves to the magic of what you're feeling.
Who wrote and produced "Love For Days"?
I wrote LFD together with my incredible writing partner Hillary Bernstein. The record was produced by my incredible friend Clifford Goilo, who is an incredible producer from Amsterdam.
What message do you want to deliver through this song?
I just wanted to write about that summer romance, that feeling of falling so hard for someone, but wanting the guy to say it first that they like you. I think a lot of women want to feel wanted & loved. So I wrote about my true life experience & I hope women, and men can connect to the record.
How is the songwriting process when you have to work on a song for a movie like “Fack ju Göhte 2”? Could you tell us a little bit about the German movie?
The writing process is very different, because the songs are based on the story thats being told in the movie. So I was told & shown the scenes of where they wanted the music and according to that we wrote 2 songs for the movie & soundtrack. Even though the process is so different than when I write a song for myself, I really enjoyed it and I could see myself doing more of that. It's fun to be a different character for a day or two.
You are currently working on your first EP. How would you define the sound of it?
The sound is a jukebox of everything I grew up listening to and everything that's inspired me. I'd describe my sound as pop music that has a folky touch to it with Swedish & Albanian melodies & lyrics that come from real life experiences.
What are the different topics you are writing about on this EP?
The topics are love, feeling homesick and just the core of who I am at this stage of my life. I write and sing about every emotion & everything I experience. :)
Who's helping you create the sound of this EP?
It's the same team, my incredible Hillary & Cliff! I don't know what I'd do without them.
You are originally from Kosovo. What can you tell us about Kosovo? How would you describe it?
Yes, I was born in Kosovo & I'm so proud of my country & the talent that continues to come from it. Rita Ora, Dua Lipa are 2 huge female artists that are dominating the music industry & I would love to join the club!
Kosovo is a very small country but people there have the biggest hearts. Because my people suffered so much during the war, I feel like it's made us stronger as a nation. We're like one big family & very supportive of anyone that is trying to do something positive! My parents are both born & raised there and I'm so inspired by their drive in life, their humility & appreciation. I continue to learn so much from them.
You moved to Sweden and then to Germany. How was it like to move from country to another? What were the biggest challenges?
Yes I did. I had to learn a new language & adjust to a new culture over and over again. When we moved to Sweden it wasn't as hard for me because I was a little baby, I grew up bilingual and that was normal for me. It was definitely harder moving as a teenager. Leaving my friends & childhood in Sweden behind. Learning a new language and a new culture, again. That was hard but I had amazing parents who would always make anything we did fun. I would have never gone as hard as I did with my music, if we had stayed in Sweden. I believe that everything happens for a reason so I'm very grateful for each step of my journey. It's made and shaped who I am today.
As an artist, which language do you feel more comfortable with when it comes to singing and performing?
Oh definitely English. It's the easiest language to sing & write, for me.
What defines you?
What defines me is my roots. My upbringing in different countries & my life experiences that I sing & write about in my songs. I only can and want to give people real music. So I sing & write about my life.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
I think if we started to understand and love and respect our differences instead of criticising first, that would make the world a better place. Because I speak 4 languages I know I can appreciate each culture having something that’s beautiful and unique, so I like to celebrate that. I do the same with my friends that come from a different culture, I love learning about a new culture. And I think if people could be more open minded and more embracing of it that would help a lot.
What's your purpose?
My purpose is to sing & write about my truth, that’s the only thing I know how to do. And hopefully that can help, inspire someone else thats going through the same thing. Even if it helps someone to forget about their "problems" for 3 minutes then I've done my job as an artist. If people can connect to my music, by dreaming away, crying, laughing, feeling empowered or just by getting "lost" in a record. I just wanna connect with my audience.
