Introduce yourself - where are you from?
Hey everyone, my name is Emily Taylor Adams, I’m a Canadian girl from the Vancouver area, but in the small town of Langley BC.
What's your story?
Ever since I was little I knew that I wanted to be a singer, I just loved watching the faces of everyone and how I made them feel everytime I would sing something. In elementary school I went through my own struggles, and I knew I wanted to be an advocate for kids when I grew up, to know that it’s okay to be different, to be who you are, no matter what! Because if we were all the same how boring would that be! And now that I’m a mom I have a whole another reason that I’ve added to my reasons why I love doing what I do! I get to show my daughter everyday that if you are consistent and work hard, dreams do come true! I want her to always know that you can do anything no matter how big the dream is!
You were born and raised in Canada. What appeals you the most about this country?
Yes I was, born and raised, It’s an absolutely gorgeous country full of extremely talented people, who I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by! But not only that, it’s a beautiful place with so many things to do! And our music has a slightly unique twist to it, too!
Growing up, what were your favorite records to sing along to?
Definitely the Dixie Chicks albums, Fly, Home, Taking the Long Way. They were probably my biggest inspiration in my music! Added in with some Faith Hill, Sara Evans, Martina Mcbride, Lee Ann Womack, Jo Dee Messina, Sheryl Crow.
When did know you could sing?
I was told I could sing full songs before I could even speak full sentences, and well, I’ve never stopped.
When did you start feeling connected to music in general?
I’ve always been connected to music, it’s always been a part of me and who I was. But when I completely fell in love with it, was when I saw my older sister sing at her school concert, and I still remember being in complete awe and knowing that I needed to be up there!
What lead you to make country music?
The story telling lyrics, I love that no matter how I was feeling at the time a song could communicate exactly how I was feeling even if I was falling short of the words on how to explain it.
What made you want to move to Nashville? What was your biggest challenge when you first got there?
Still a Langley girl born and raised, which I always will be, is filled with my family, nature and well it’s my home, but I split my time from my hometown and Nashville, which has always held a special place in my heart! From the first time I landed in Nashville at about 15, I had this feeling come over me, from the creative vibe everywhere, the music, the people, the beauty of the homes. I knew this place was gonna have a special spot in my future!
How would you define your music?
I would say my music is storytelling, healing, relatable, calming, and something I hope will create an emotion from within that can help someone deal with whatever it is they are going through in their life.
You recently released your new single "Leave The Light On". What's the story behind this song?
Basically this song is about that pure authentic love, finding that soul connection that both people are feeling that is completely unexplainable, but you just know!
Who did you work with?
This song was co-written with one of my best friends Beth Marie Anderson, she has a way of pulling things out of me that are raw, emotional and pure.
What message do you want to convey through "Leave The Light On"?
Don’t settle for just anyone, find that unexplainable passion. That person when you meet them you just know.
Where did you get your inspiration from?
Beth and I were talking about her and her fiance and how passionately in love they are, planning their wedding and starting a new chapter in their life. They have a soul bond that anyone can see, then we started talking about how I wanted to find that kind of love one day! We were looking through our list of titles and “Leave The Light On” popped out and it just seemed so fitting for our vulnerable chat and this song just poured out in a couple of hours!
What does singing make you feel?
It makes me feel like this is what I’m here for, and what I’m meant to do, when I look into a crowd and see tears in their eyes, when they are dancing or singing along, I know that I’ve touched their soul and found a spot that was relatable for them!
What do you think of today's music industry?
I think the industry today has changed so much but I think it’s pretty cool as it’s giving so many more people a chance to get there music heard and to do what we love to do.
What's your opinion on streaming platforms like Spotify? Do you care about the number of streams?
I think that streaming is a great way for people to get to hear music now, but at the same time making it harder for artists to make money and create a comfortable living. The numbers are extremely important now.
As an artist, what do you want to accomplish?
I want to be able to heal people with my music, no matter what people are going through, people are always drawn to music which brings me to my reason and why I’ve continued to push to do what I do. I want to be able to create a platform where I’m able to go into hospitals sing to people who need me, talk to kids about my past, the things that I’ve been through that has gotten me to where I am now and to know they can too! I would love nothing more than to be able to make that dream a reality, to be able to make a living doing what I love to do, while also being able to perform in front of 100,000 people or more!
What are your goals for 2019?
To get more of my music/videos out that I’ve been working so hard on!
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
I honestly feel that the world needs more kindness and understanding, we’re all just trying to make it in this world and how much easier would it be if we all encouraged each other and pointed out the positive things people are doing for the world, instead of what people are doing wrong! I saw a quote the other day and I think it’s so true “even the smallest act of kindness for another person is like a drop of water, it will make ripples throughout the entire pond”.
What biggest lessons have you learnt as a human being and as an artist?
The biggest thing I’ve learnt, is that everyone is going through their own battles in life, everyday is your choice to be happy, to smile, to laugh, even if you feel like the whole world is caving in, you can always find a light at the end of the tunnel! I promise! There is a solution, positivity, and a lesson in everything! In every relationship whether it's personal, or business related, trust and honesty is the most important thing!
