Night Market
Following up their debut EP Miles Alone released last year, Los Angeles indie rock band Night Market revealed their new single “White Seasons” on May 24th.
Showcasing impeccable harmonies and stunning melodies, the new single is about longing for better days.
Their song "Miles Alone" was featured on NBC's Manifest and an early version of "White Seasons" was featured on both NBC's The Mysteries of Laura and ABC's A Million Little Things.
Evan Effres and Jon Swan have performed at iconic venues in Los Angeles such as The Hotel Cafe and The Mint.
The new single is off their upcoming three-track acoustic EP, set to be released on June 21st.

Introduce yourselves - where are you from?
Evan: I’m from LA. I grew up in Calabasas and Woodland Hills and now live in West LA.
Jon: I grew up in Jacksonville, FL, and performed throughout FL before moving out to LA to study at USC.
What's the band's story? How did you meet?
Evan: Jon and I met through my stepsister, Arielle, who Jon has been dating for several years now. We started jamming here and there and in the summer of 2017 is when we started playing together regularly and booking gigs around LA.
Jon: You nailed it!
When did you realize you had to form a band?
Evan: The first time I heard Jon play guitar, probably around 2015, I was blown away! He was shredding these jazz licks on his Gibson hollow body and I knew we needed to start jamming. We played on and off for a while, but in 2017, we decided we wanted to go all in and form a band together, which became Night Market.
Jon: I heard Evan’s music through my girlfriend and immediately loved his songwriting, guitar playing, and musicianship. We had a great time gigging some but then decided to create music together in 2017!
How would you define Night Market, the band?
Evan: Indie surf/folk rock.
Jon: I would define Night Market as a dynamic sound that stems from Evan and mine’s various influences and musicianship. We love creating for a small acoustic setting just as much as full band arrangements.
You've just released your new single "White Seasons" - what's the story behind this song?
Evan: The song is about longing for better days of the past while going through the more trying times in life, such as coping with heartbreak, watching helplessly as a loved one deals with pain, or feelings of isolation and loneliness. Even with all of these troubles, there are countless joyful memories and an infinite number of incredible experiences to look forward to. The better days I was thinking of when writing “White Seasons” were trips up to the mountains during winter with my family and friends.
Could you describe us the songwriting/production process for this song?
Evan: I wrote the lyrics and music around 2011 or 2012 while going to school at UCSB. When Jon and I started to play together, it was one of the first songs we worked on. We tried a few variations of the guitar parts and landed on what it is today, which I really like a lot! We currently play two versions of the song: an acoustic version, which is what we recorded, and a full band version, which is typically what we play at our shows. Jon and I recorded, mixed, and mastered the song ourselves in my home studio, aka my laptop at my apartment.
What do you like the most about "White Seasons"?
Evan: I love how the guitars and harmonies blend together to fill in space and how the skipping of certain beats throughout the song pushes the song forward.
Jon: My favorite part about this song is the long melody Evan wrote, and that one full verse is one repetition of the melody. In this version, I love the harmonies that we’ve come up and the balance of the harmonies on the verse and the chorus.
What can you tell us about your upcoming EP?
Jon: Our upcoming EP is a three-song acoustic EP that we recorded to both show a different side to our music and to keep our music going. The lyrics are showcased more and the arrangements reflect the tight practicing reflected both live and in the full-band versions recordings.
What are the different topics you are talking about on this project?
Evan: I think all three songs discuss glimpses of hope in times of darkness and focus on weathering the storm of heartbreak or loneliness or whatever by focusing on better times of the past or looking forward to better times in the future.
Jon: This EP encompasses the self-reflection that comes with shorter days and the passing years. Whether it’s through the mirror of relationships or your own decisions, the only person who can often make any change is yourself.
As a band, what do you want to accomplish?
Evan: Our main goal has always been to create music that we’re proud of and that resonates with people. I love our songs, love playing them with the group, and I hope that they each evoke a positive feeling in the listener.
Jon: We want to express our music in all the forms and methods that we can while writing music that our listeners can resonate with.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
Evan: Empathy and political accountability. Also, more donuts.
Jon: The world would be a better place if there was any effort made by the majority of people to be a little bit more understanding today than yesterday. Also, more donuts and iced coffee.
What biggest lessons have you learned as human beings and as artists?
Evan: The best lesson I’ve learned is to not be afraid to fail and, when you do fail at something, learn from it.
Jon: As a human being I’ve learned that my connection to my art is what allows me to openly explore and share my own humanity.
