Australian artist Kodey Brims unveils new EP Out of My Hands.
Recorded and produced in Nashville with fellow Berklee College of Music alumni Invisible Heroes, the 4 track EP deals about time and change as a young adult.
“Red Dust” is about feeling lost and stuck, not knowing how to move forward. “Out of My Hands” is about realizing that you can’t control everything in your life and you should focus on what you can. “Neon Colours” is love song celebrating the joy in life and finding that with someone else. “Thunder” is realizing the true power for positive change that every young adult has,” explains Brims.

Introduce yourself - where are you from?
My name is Kodey Brims, I’m from Brisbane, Australia, I have two dogs and I love gold glitter.
What's your story?
I grew up in Brisbane with a love for music and when I graduated high school I moved to the United States in Boston to study at Berklee College of Music. It was the best four years of my life. After I graduated I moved down to Nashville and jumped into the music scene.
When did you start making music?
I started writing songs when I was twelve, but I before that I was taking piano and clarinet classes. Music has always been a really fun exciting thing for me, and I’m so lucky to have it.
When did you know you could sing?
I actually started writing songs first, and to be honest, my voice was not great. It wasn’t really a sense of knowing I could sing, it was more a stubborn persistence that I had to learn how to sing well to be able to convey the stories of my songs.
What gave you the confidence to pursue music as a career and release your original music?
I have been so lucky to have such supportive parents. They have always believed in me and encouraged me to be better! I’ve also been lucky to have music teachers who have pushed me to be better. They really nurtured my songwriting dreams and gave me opportunities to perform them live. I’m so grateful for that.
How would you define Kodey, Brims, the artist?
Kodey Brims the artist is vulnerable and honest with sprinkles of dreamy pop.
You’ve just released your new EP Out of My Hands. How does it feel like?
I have been waiting for this to come out for about 6 months so I’m excited to finally let these songs go out in the world!
Could you describe us the songwriting/production process for this project?
I wrote all 4 songs and then brought them to my producers. For some we really collaborated on how we wanted to production to reflect the music and we made some really big changes in some cases. Other songs, I had an idea of what I wanted and we worked from there.
How was it like to collaborate with Invisible Heroes?
It was really great. These guys really know what they’re doing and we’re happy to work with me for what I wanted out of the project. We had a great time.
What are the different topics you are talking about on this project?
The main theme of the EP is dealing with time and change as a young adult. Every song is part of the story. “Red Dust” is about feeling lost and stuck, not knowing how to move forward. “Out of My Hands” is about realizing that you can’t control everything in your life and you should focus on what you can. “Neon Colours” is love song celebrating the joy in life and finding that with someone else. “Thunder” is realizing the true power for positive change that every young adult has.
What was the hardest part about making this project? And what was the best part?
The hardest part of this project was trusting myself to make good creative decisions. It was also hard to let go sometimes and trust that my producers knew better a lot of times. I think it worked out great! The best part was cranking up the speakers in my car and listening to the final mixes. It was amazing.
What's the story behind the song "Out of My Hands"?
I wrote “Out of My Hands” as a way to process and deal with all of the changes that had been happening in my life. In a particular moment of carelessly strumming the guitar, I started singing the chorus melody and I knew I had to finally write about all these feelings I had bottled up inside. In the end, the song became a cathartic release of telling myself what I needed to hear. This song is a reassurance that it’s okay to not have total control over your life. Time and change are things no one can control and it’s okay when things turn out differently than you expect. As a young adult there are so many external pressures to deal with- being hard on yourself doesn’t have to be one of them.
What message do you want to convey through the song "Thunder"?
This is my “introduction to feminism” song. It is about acknowledging the things in the world that aren’t equal, being angry about it, and then discovering the power for change that we all have. Thunder marks the beginning of a storm, before lightning and rain and wind. This song is about my journey of identifying as a feminist and figuring out what that means to me.
What made you want to name your EP Out of My Hands?
This EP represents a time in my life where I felt really lost and was really hard on myself when things didn’t work exactly as I had imagine. The EP is about growing up and learning to trust who you are. I feel that “Out of My Hands” summarizes that transition from wanting total control, to trusting myself and going with whatever happens.
What did you learn about yourself after finishing this EP?
I learned that I can still make good music after many hours in the studio, and that I want to push my music in more of a pop direction. I also learned that there was something good to be learned from every experience.
As an artist, what do you want to accomplish?
I want to make really good music. I know that means a continuing journey of writing and practicing and that is exciting to me. I want to play on big stages and have people sing my songs. I’ve got a long way to go, but this EP is the start of believing that it can be possible.
What appeals you the most about Nashville?
The music community. The Nashville music community inspires me every day to work harder and be better. It is so open and friendly and you can see that there is hope to advance in the music industry when you see your friends kicking goals and making waves. I love it!
How do you want to be remembered for?
I want to be remembered as genuine person who is really good at music and loyal to her friends and family. ️
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
A little empathy. I know it can be hard sometimes but just taking a moment to consider someone else’s feelings and experiences can change a lot. I think there would be a lot less blind hatred in the world.
Better public school systems! (Also paying public school teachers what they’re worth!!)
What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?
To be patient! It’s okay if things don’t happen immediately, as long as you keep working hard and are happy doing it. I’ve recently put happiness as a priority in my life and it is really working out :)
Also, don’t ever stop dreaming. The world is full of possibilities. Having dreams and goals are what make life exciting!
