Hi Brooke, congrats on your debut EP !! How does it feel like to release your first EP ever?
I’m pumped!! It feels like a giant step forward for my music since I’ve only ever put out singles. It’s the first time my music has all felt cohesive and really representative of the artist I want to be.
When did you start working on this project? Do you remember the first song you did for this project?
When I wrote “Lemonade” in October 2018, I had no idea it would be the song to set off an EP, but I knew it was different than any song before. I’d finally hit the sound I’d always been searching for.
What are the different topics you are talking about on this EP?
These songs take you through my experiences as a young adult - crushes, uncertainty in relationships, self-love, and insecurities are all topics covered.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process?
I usually start a song with a title (someone once made fun of me for having so many one-word titles, so I decided to own it). Each full production on the EP has my signature bubble-popping noise, which acts as a unifying theme. In the writing room, we would start with that and see how we could make a new song within the same vein. The melodic hook is always the most important part to me.
Who helped you create this project?
Yuval Maayan was my right-hand man for this project - he produced every song on the EP. We started working together when he lived here in Nashville, and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to continue once he moved back to Israel. We Skyped, emailed, and Facebook messaged to complete each song! All the photography was done by the amazing John Brown. I went in with visions for each cover art and accompanying promotional materials, and he gracefully brought them to fruition.
What's the story behind the song 'Perfect'?
I wrote this song with Chelsea Balan and Will McBeath about how people were constantly complimenting my social media presence. Of course it looks I’m killing it... that’s what I want you to think! I wanted to sing about all the flaws I hide from my posts. The first line we came up with was “I take it out on my mom like every time she calls.” That’s a very true habit I have and always regret after hanging up.
What did you learn about yourself after finishing this EP?
I learned that I will never be satisfied with my music. When I first started this EP, I thought these were the best songs I’d ever put out. Now, I’ve got songs I can’t wait to release afterward! It’s crazy how much you grow when you’re just putting in the work and not thinking about it.
What do you like the most about this EP?
I like most that every song touches on a fundamental part of who I am as person.
What made you want to name your EP Me?
Named after the most recent single, “Me,” this collection of songs all helped me understand who I am as a person and as an artist. If you want to know me, listen to these songs. These songs are “me.”
What can you tell us about the artwork? What was the inspiration behind it?
The artwork is symbolic. These songs are a bare representation of who I am, dressed up with rhinestoned productions. The yellow, orange, and pink colors from the monochromatic single artworks for “Lemonade," “Bored," and “Me” are finally unified as one.
What is your goal for this EP?
My goal is to use these songs as a starting off point for the rest of my musical career. I know who I am now and what I want to say, and this is just the beginning.
