Jodie Mellor

I’ve said this before but Jodie Mellor was one of the first artists I ever interviewed. I think I first interviewed her in 2014? I found her on Youtube many many years ago and I watched her grow and evolve all these years. She kept on getting better and she’s become one incredible songwriter. I’m so excited about this new release “High Tide”. I think she found her sound with this new single, and she knows who she is as an artist. She’s a singer, a musician, a songwriter, but most of all, a story-teller. The melodies and the songwriting on “High Tide” are absolutely stunning. We can only love it.

I can’t wait to hear more originals from her. I always believed in her and it’s so great to see she’s still working hard on her dreams, and it’s paying off.

Please go support Jodie and her new single “High Tide”, now available worldwide :)

Hi Jodie! How are you? What have you been up to?

Hey! I’m great thank you. At the time of writing I’m feeling very busy and nervous for release but SO excited! I’ve been writing, recording, filming, doing way too many autumnal photo shoots and eating too much coffee and walnut cake. Music wise I have just released a collaborative single with Charlie T Smith, ‘Mine & Hers’ and the response has made me even more excited to finally release ‘High Tide’.

"High Tide" is your new single. How does it feel to release new original music again?

It’s a weird feeling. Since my last release in 2017, my attitude towards music and writing has completely changed. Back then it was more of a hobby, whereas now I don’t do anything else. I have decided that this is what I want to do, and putting this new music out is me telling everyone who I am now. I think I have found my sound, at least for now, and it’s so exciting yet so daunting to be sharing that with others. I feel a lot of pressure, but at the same time finally feel ready for it.

What's the story/inspiration behind this song?

The song describes the feeling of knowing that better times are coming. It’s a reminder to be grateful for the things that bring you happiness and that processing how you’re feeling is really important, especially to me. I started writing it on a Friday evening when I was at home by myself and in a low place, but knew that in the morning my perspective would be different and tried to show that thought process throughout the song.

Could you describe the songwriting/production process? Who helped you create this single?

The song started in January this year as a couple of lines in my phone notes. I picked it back up again a month later but didn’t finish writing it until May. I remember finishing the bridge and running downstairs in lockdown to show it to my friends because I thought it sounded SO Taylor Swift and if you know me that means I thought it was good haha. I recorded it with my boyfriend Charlie (@charlietyrrellsmith), who produced the track for me. We started it at his parents house in South West France over the Summer, and finished it back in Bristol. It was so rewarding to finally find someone who I could communicate the sound that I wanted with and I think because of that the song is the most me of anything I’ve ever shared before. The track was mixed by Jake Dawes (@jakedawesdrums) and mastered by Pete Maher who have both done an incredible job.

What made you want to release "High Tide" as a single?

I think I knew when I was writing High Tide that it would be the first track I released after all this time. I’m usually quite guilty of writing half a song or even a whole song and loving it at first but hating it after a few weeks, but this song has just grown on me with time. I’m not sure if I will say the same in a few months time but hopefully I do! I also feel it shows the way my music and style has matured and encompasses all of my influences into one track, which will hopefully be able to show people where I’m at and where I’m headed.

As an artist, what lesson have you learnt since the release of your debut EP?

SO much. I knew pretty much next to nothing about the industry or even myself as an artist and still feel like I haven’t even gotten started yet. I would say one of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt is that no one knows my music like I do. I’ve learnt to not be influenced by others and to stand my ground when it comes to what I want to achieve and how. Trying to negotiate being a young woman in an industry surrounded by men was difficult, but I’ve now become stronger and much more assertive within myself in those previously daunting situations.

How would you define Jodie Mellor, the artist?

I was recently described as ‘a herbal tea enthusiast in a world of pornstar martinis’ and think it’s very fitting haha. I describe myself online as the ‘professional bedroom singer’ and think that the intimate setting in which I began to grow my following still reflects my music and myself as an artist; intimate, honest, and conversational.

What message do you want to give to the world?

You are capable of doing anything you put your mind to. If you can think it, you can achieve it, and someone somewhere will always love what you create, even if that one person is you.
