Lost Stars

Nashville-based band Lost Stars releases new single “I Don’t Know You Anymore”.

Co-written with Aaron Bonus and co-produced with David Thulin, the uptempo & catchy pop single came from an emotional breakthrough after a breakup.

Comprised of Damian Malnar, Charley Holden and Trey Warner, the band is inspired by artists like The 1975 and Imagine Dragons. Fusing pop, electronic and rock, the trio has garnered over 200k streams with their successful single “Never Getting Over You” on Spotify and has collaborated with Nashville-based artist Kiera Loveless on the record “Stop” released last year.

“I Don’t Know You Anymore” is now available on major streaming platforms.

Hey guys, happy to feature you once again on my blog. "I Don't Know You Anymore" is your new single. what's the story behind this song?

When we were writing the song, a couple of us were dealing with the lingering feelings of recent breakups.  Which is always a difficult time but a creative one as well.  This song is about the moment you hit an emotional breakthrough.  The realization that maybe what you wanted out of a relationship with someone was never really there.  Sometimes you can find yourself staying inside a dead end relationship with someone because you’re lying to yourself.  It can turn into trying to prove to everyone else that you are happy and that you can work through it.  But at a certain point, you just shrug and face honesty. What are we doing here? What are we? We’re not happy…

When did you start working on this song? Could you please describe us the songwriting/production process?

We started writing this song with our friend Aaron Bonus in his studio back in October.  The song kind of flowed out of us after Damian started playing the keys.  We started getting into this discussion about how you think you’re meant to be with someone because rose-tinted glasses mess you up.  When you’re wearing rose-tinted glasses, red flags just look like ordinary flags.  We wrote the whole song in about 4 hours.

What was it like to collaborate with David Thulin on this record?

Working with David is a dream.  We’ve had a great time working with him on songs like “Never Getting Over You” and “Legacy” in the past, so he was an obvious choice.  We went into the studio with him for seven days, talked about the world and philosophy, geeked out over art and synthesizers, laughed every day, and played a crap ton of Mario Kart.  David is great at expanding upon our ideas.  The sounds that he creates are inspiring.  And most of all, he’s just a great human.

What do you like the most about this song?

The synths and guitars are really exciting, but even more than that it’s super relatable.  The feelings in the song are very real to the three of us, and the melody is super catchy.  Also, there’s a fun little surprise at the end from our time in the studio.

What can you tell us about the artwork?

Libby Danforth, a photographer friend of ours, listened to our new music and had this vision of capturing emotional moments in the home through still life photography.  She came over to the house we were living in at the time because she was convinced we should do a shoot in it.  After listening to “I Don’t Know You Anymore”, she walked into one of the bathrooms and said we had to photograph that bathtub by the blinds.  We gave her full creative license because we are just in love with her artistic vision. Also, the three of us spent about 20 minutes in a bathtub together, so that’s nice.

What do you want people to feel when listening to this single?

We want people to know that they’re not alone.  Sometimes when you’re at the end of difficult relationship you can feel like the burden is yours alone.  That people don’t get it.  That you’re a screw up who can’t figure out how to be happy.  But we’ve all been there too, and you can get through this!

What are your thoughts on today's current situation around the world? How are you holding up?

Most of us are laid off hahaha.  But we’re gonna make it through.  It certainly is a pretty crazy time to be alive.  We don’t think the world will ever be quite the same after COVID-19, but we will find a new normal.  And if we all have faith and make healthy choices, we can make it through together.

What message do you want to give to people around the world?

New Normal will be worthwhile.  I know change seems scary, but we will come out of this.  Together!  You’re never alone.
