Nightly
I rarely do this but this time I decided to write something personal and honest for this article.
I think I discovered Nightly on Spotify last year. Their single "The Movies" is the one that made me want to explore their music even more. “Twenty Something” is one of the best records I’ve ever heard in a long time. That drop on “Holding On” is probably one of the coolest drops ever and “Still I'm holding on to your old sweatshirt, the black one with the cigarette burns” is one of my favorite lyric. The melodies on “No Vacancy” are absolutely mind-blowing.
Their music just reminds me why I love music in the first place. It’s inspiring, and it’s something I want to keep listening.
We hear a lot of records influenced by the 80’s these days and we hear a lot of the same stuff. But Nightly is standing out from everyone else thanks to their unique productions, their honest songwriting, their timeless melodies and their authenticity in their art in general. And you can tell when an artist or a band is being true to themselves: there’s no bullshit - just art and authenticity. Nothing more, and that’s just enough (at least for me).
They've become one of my favorite current bands (I don't like saying the word "favorite" but sometimes, it's just the only word that fits with my thoughts). Their production is the kind of productions that makes you say "this is interesting" or "this is different". Their records are records you will probably remember in the next fifteen years, and I’m here for that.
With that being said, their new single "you should probably just hang up" is out.
Go stream it now :)

Introduce yourselves - what's the band's story?
Hi! The band is made up of myself (Jonathan) my cousin Joey, and our best friend Nick. We formed in Nashville in 2016.
"you should probably just hang up" is your new single - what's the story behind this song?
It’s inspired by a conversation I had with a good friend about his toxic relationship. She would pop in and out of his life at her convenience and talk him into doing things that he thought he was over.
Could you describe the songwriting process for this single? When did you start working on it?
We wrote and recorded it probably 6 or 7 weeks ago. We made the chord progression and a basic version of the beat and put it on loop. The words came pretty immediately. The whole song was written in a couple hours, then we tweaked the chorus the next day.
Production wise, what was the inspiration?
Honestly the drum and key loop that we made provided the feel for the song. We really just added things to build dynamics, but it happened really fast.
What made you want to release "You Should Probably Just Hang Up" as a single?
We were picking between a few, and this one just felt like a good bridge between where we have been and where we’re going as a band.
What major lesson have you learned since the beginning of your career?
Trust your gut and pay attention to the people who are fans of your music.
You recently signed with BMG. What made you want to sign with them and how did things change for you as a band?
They have been encouraging and supportive since day one. They have a big global presence and we’re excited to grow with their support.
What vision do you have for your art?
To stay true to ourselves, and constantly push ourselves to be as good and authentic as possible.
What advice would you give to anyone who'd like to form a band?
Have fun. If you don’t love it, there’s no point.
What message do you want to give to the world?
Hope everyone is hanging in there. I know it’s a crazy time in life, but hopefully we’ll leave this with a greater appreciation of what really matters in life.
