Introduce yourself - what's your story?

Hi, it's Alessia here. I'm a 22-year-old singer songwriter and vocal mainly working from my home studio. I get hired as vocalist and songwriter by producers from all over the world, I like writing camps and I'm working on my solo pop project with my amazing friends. I had my first approach to the business at 12, when I debuted on national tv with my guitar and super long hair, but it all started earlier: dad is a music producer and studio owner, mum used to be a dancer and my aunt is a vocal coach and former singer. I grew up surrounded by creatives making and listening to good music.

When did you start feeling connected to music and art in general? Do you remember a specific moment in your life where music made a huge difference?

I clicked with music in my life several times. At 8, when I purposely recorded a song for the first time, at 12 when I started picking up instruments (piano, cello, guitar, then when I discovered songwriting, around 13/14 but I was not serious about it. The last click happened at 18 when I studied at CET (prestigious songwriting school) and I decided writing would've been my job.

When did you start writing songs? Were you writing songs in Italian or English?

My first songs date back to 2012 I guess. I started by playing around with both languages. Really ugly songs lol

What made you want to write and sing in English today?

I feel more confident when I write and sing in English. It’s weird but I'm not that comfortable in Italian.

What gave you the confidence to be an artist and release your original music?

It's been ups and downs. By January 2019 when I released my first song I had 7 demos ready, I was trying to pitch those but no one was actually interested. After droppin "Black Soul" with no expectations, the weird paths of life led me to my management, and that really opened up many opportunities for me allowing me to grow faster and better.

Who was the first person to ever believe in you?

Dad 🦋

How would you define Alessia Labate, the artist?

Alessia Labate is a pop princess and tries to cover many shades and vibes of pop. She mainly writes pop songs or just therapy songs. That’s what I am about right now.

"Something Special" is your new single - what's the story behind this song?

I have an unreleased song called "Who Am I", really old one, and I was tired of hearing that song in my head each time I heard those chords, so I started playing around with those chords and SS came out. That same day I had a skype session with Ryan Stewart, we quickly wrapped it up🦋

Who helped you create this single? When did you start working on it?

I wrote it a year ago. Ryan Produced it, I produced the vocals and my friend Davide Ruffini mastered it at Wisseloord. We were in different corners of the world 🦋

What did you feel when writing this song?

I felt grateful for my friends, especially for Walter my best friend, creative director, photographer. (Check his instagram @visioneprospettica TO BE BLOWN AWAY).

What made you want to release "Something Special" as a single?

My previous single OMG is fun and not too deep. I enjoyed playing the “90s pop star” role for that song and it did really well with the Press (Billboard, NSS), but I felt I needed to get more intimate. People need kindness right now, while people needed some fun when I released OMG.

What can you tell us about the music video?

Walter directed the video and had the idea of the post-party situation. We showed the 2 different feeling the absence of someone can leave.

How does music impact your life?

It simply revolves around it. How is life without music?

What biggest lesson have you learned since your very first release?

Listen to the right people's opinion. Learn to say no to what you genuinely don't wanna do, but also don’t be too picky about it, especially when starting out. If you change your mind about something be clear and respectful when communicating your decision.

In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?

I don’t know guys, the world is such a wild place. I feel like we should be more in touch with ourselves first.

What message do you want to deliver to the world?

Be yourself no matter what. It’s painful but so worth it.

And Italians do it better LOL
