Reynard Silva
I have heard about his music since 2007, and today, I am blessed to work with him. Getting to work with someone you’ve been a fan of is a great opportunity but also a big motivation to me.
Driven by his passion for singing/writing and influenced by artists such as Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown or Ne-Yo; Reynard Silva keeps making his own waves in the industry.
After several albums released in Japan, he’s ready to release a new album this summer.
Check out my interview with him :)
Tell us about you. Introduce yourself. Where are you from?
My name is Reynard Silva and I’m from the San Francisco Bay Area.
How and when did you start making music?
I started making music in my early high school years. My older brother was a recording artist, so I was fortunate to be exposed to and experience the creative process of writing and producing at an early age.
Do you play any instrument? Describe us your writing process.
I play a little piano. When I write a song, I usually write in sections. For instance, I’ll loop the verse section of the song I’m working on, and loop it over and over until I get the right melody to fit the pocket. Then I apply lyrics to it. I do the same for the hook and the bridge. Then I’ll find a way to mesh them altogether.
What is the best song you ever wrote so far? Why?
The best song I’ve ever written so far is my first major placement. It’s a song called “Heart Attack” and was on EXO’s album last year. Being able to write a song as I wanted it and to see such a huge act perform it and make a video to it was pretty awesome. Definitely a humbling experience.

What is the biggest struggle as a singer/songwriter?
My biggest struggle as a songwriter is adjusting and being able to step out of the box. I have my tendencies and similarities in all my songs, which I intend, but at the same time, I want it to be a new sound.
And on the other hand, what is the greatest satisfaction?
The greatest satisfaction is being able to portray how one feels through writing and melody. Being able to hear something in your head and executing it through music is pure satisfaction.
What does music make you feel?
Music makes me feel a ton of ways. It really depends on the mood and sound of a particular song.
Who is your biggest influence? Why?
My biggest influence is my mom. She constantly believes in what I do, no matter what I go through. She always supports me.
Do people’s opinions have a big influence on you when making music? Does it change the way you create?
In a way, yes. I like to take into consideration constructive criticism, because without it, there’s no room for growth. It doesn’t exactly change the way I create, but allows me to expand and try new things.

In your opinion, what are the key skills someone should have if they want to work in the music industry?
Some key skills (or qualities) are having the ability to stay persistent, hardworking, and patient. Remaining confident in the work that one does. These things I always have to remind myself to be.
Any upcoming projects?
A new album in Japan this summer. Stay tuned, Japan!
If you had to change one thing in this world, what would it be?
I would want to change the amount of time in a day. In that way, we’d be able to write more records!
What is your dream?
My dream is to be able to land more major placements with artists who influence my music and writing. Also, to buy my parents a new house. That would be a dream come true for sure!
