But as some of us may know from first hand experience this can only go on for so long before it falls apart and you realize that what you thought was unconditional was really just out of pity,” explains Saveria.

Introduce yourself - where are you from?

Heyooo! Im Saveria, a singer song writer from London ON Canada!!

What's your story?

Oh boy this is a long one. I was born in the Capitol City, Ottawa and moved to London when I was 7 years old. During my formative years, I was exposed to many flavours of music. Motown, R&B, rock  artists such as Aretha Franklin, Lenny Kravitz, Joss Stone, from my mom’s collection of CD’s and vinyl. My music career started two years after when I joined a kids cover CD called “mini pop kids” and recorded commercials and songs in professional environments. From there - I did numerous gigs for TV and played any show I could around Ontario, then branched out all over Canada and eventually made my way to LA, got signed when I was 14 years old, dropped when I was 16. I still had huge dreams in high school but thats when I discovered the guitar and songwriting and had a lot of self discoveries on my own. I decided to start recording myself, using my phone or on garage band. Anyway that I could start producing…I tried it. I came across my band mates in high school while taking a music production course and we wrote songs and became friends through music, but we were never serious about making a band at the time. College came around & I knew I needed to explore music production further, so I landed in the Music Industry arts program at Fanshawe college. Learning about production at a higher level really opened my mind and ears to new sounds and I drowned myself with new music of all genres because I became obsessed with how people recorded instruments and recorded sounds. Later Daytrip was formed…. with my bandmates from high school and we released an EP “Sleep through the madness” in 2018. At the time I was very heavily influenced by soul, psychedelic pop, and indie bands, so  it naturally came out through the songs we had written.

Shortly after, I promised myself that I’d start writing for myself again as an artist and exploring Daytrip as a collective.

Over 2018 I had many self discoveries of who I was as an artist, but was still struggling to find the right sound that screamed me. Being influenced by so many different genres over the course of my life has been a blessing and curse almost. I’ve opened up my heart to so many possibilities but I’m an indecisive bitch and just wished I could’ve made a record that’s multi genre. But hey….that’s not an artist standard right? Then I found “The Launch” Canada’s hit reality show on CTV. Being the chosen artist for that show brought me back to my roots (Pun intended) and I started listening to the old soul and R&B my mom played around the house when I was a kid. I didn’t realize I was falling back in love, I just fell. Im so glad I did because I don’t think I would have done the collaborations I did this year, or even think about writing my new single “Pity”. To be continued….

How did your voice evolve over the years?

My voice has always been similar in many ways but it defiantly evolved as I got into different genres. I learned a lot about finding my voice through emotion when I was 16 and that was kind of the game changer.  I know I’ll always be evolving though. Im only 22 so with more years, comes more change.

When did you decide to fully pursue music as a career?

I couldn’t tell you - I was so darn young. I just remember knowing that was my dream and here I am.

Who was the first person to ever believe in you?

My mom. She was always there from day one.

How did things change for you since your first release?

I’ve grown such a beautiful fan base, and it’s continuing to grow. I’ve been gigging on stages that I never thought I’d be on…this year I opened for Marshmello at Rebel Toronto, and flew to Quebec for FEQ! WILD!

What did your experience on The Launch teach you as an artist?

It really taught me confidence (again) I think after being dropped from a label so young, I kinda had my wings torn a bit and I didn’t heal fully like I wanted to. The dream still lived on at that age but I really needed something to push me up and give me my full strength back.

"Pity" is your latest single - what's the story behind this song?

This single is one that really speaks to anyone who's ever been in a relationship where they feel like their partner is only with them because they feel bad or they’re only sticking around because it seems like the right thing to do. But as some of us may know from first hand experience this can only go on for so long before it falls apart and you realize that what you thought was unconditional was really just out of pity.

This single connects with a broad audience and the production and vocals provide an experience that I think you could enjoy without even paying attention to the lyrics.

Who helped you create this particular song?

My amazing guitarist/producer from my band Daytrip (John Fellner) helped me write it and also played on it, and then my wonderful friend Ryan who goes by Bedrm helped with the drum stitch.

Could you describe us the songwriting process?

While listening to the instrumental demo the first few times, I felt a pain but also a lot of beauty within the music and I knew I wanted to talk about something emotional and relatable.

It was written in order of the song, which usually doesn’t happen when I’m writing. But it was very much a story of a realization so I didn’t want to jump around with too many ideas. The lyrics came together almost instinctively though. I was dealing with some lost thoughts and feelings from the past and I was very present with those feelings again so that being said, I think this is the quickest song I've ever written with John.

What do you like the most about this single?

This song really feels like me. I think there’s hint of different era’s of me even and I think that’s the type of music I’ve been trying to create for a long time.

What made you want to release "Pity" as a single?

Coming back from DTTR with a different sound was my main goal, because I wanted people to realize that the song was a little too sugary pop for me. So simply put, “Pity” really just felt right.

What can you tell us about the artwork? What was the inspiration behind it?

I really wanted the artwork and music video to scream a story. I always remember being a young hopeless romantic and pulling petals off of flowers and believing the fate of my crush was in the hands of “He loves me, he loves me not”.

I wanted the roses on the cover with the petals on the floor to symbolize that story for me. But the whole point of “Pity” is that she realizes that the flowers are just bullshit and she doesn’t even care for the roses anymore.

What does it mean for you to be an artist?

It means that I get to make myself, my friends, family and fans proud, because I feel like this is what I was meant to do. Be creative everyday and inspire the people around me.

What do you like the most about r&b and soul music?

R&B and Soul embodies so many different types of music, Blues, gospel and more. It”s genres like these that will never fade because the songs are almost always relatable and soul searching.

What advices would you give to anyone who'd like to work in the music industry?

Know your shit, work hard, and never let rejection stop you.

What do you want to accomplish as a human being?

Owning a successful brand.

In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?

If everyone had the ability to forgive and empathize with your enemies.

What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?

That working hard doesn’t always pay off. But you have to find in your heart that it will pay off if you keep going.
