Introduce yourself - what's your story?

I started singing when I was seven and had just moved from Texas to Florida with my family, my grandmother did a genealogy project where she found out that we were (distantly) related to Pochahontas. This made me want to sing "Colors of the Wind" at my school's talent show, and after that, the rest is history. I started doing vocal lessons and musical theater and eventually wound up learning guitar and writing my own songs.

Could you tell us about your first experience in the music industry? What lessons did you learn since then?

I think my first experience in the music industry was my first CMA Fest in Nashville (2012ish). I got to see so many of my favorite artists perform for the first time there, and I think it was one of the first times I truly felt connected to the city.

How would you define Liddy Clark, the artist?

I'd say that Liddy Clark is a bright mix of pop and country, taking lyrics grounded in reality (sometimes a little too real) and infusing them with pop melodies that hook listeners after one listen.

How did things change for you since your first release?

I've grown up since my first release. I released "Painted by Numbers" when I was 18 and was really just getting started in the industry. I've written hundreds of songs since then and have felt thousands of emotions. I think I've evolved into the artist I was always meant to be.

"Friendly Fire" is your latest single - could you describe us the songwriting/production process? Who helped you create this song?

This was actually one of the first songs I completed by myself! I learned how to finish songs by writing with other people at first, and I wrote this song as I was transitioning into learning how to completely write songs by myself. I got the idea for "Friendly Fire" after speaking with one of my friends about how another person had been talking about me behind my back. I was driving at the time, and as soon as I got home I started writing the song. It only took me 30 minutes to finish, which is still the quickest I've ever written a song!

What do you like the most about this single?

I like that it's very different from my previous releases. This shows a side of me that isn't afraid to speak out against others who are treating me wrong and I think that's something very important I want to get across to people.

You recently released the acoustic version of your song "Shot Down (Stand Up)" - what's the story behind the song?

I wrote “Shot Down (Stand Up)” after the shooting that happened at MSD in Parkland, where I grew up. I wrote this song a few months after it happened because I knew if I wrote it when it was still new I’d get way too emotional (even for a song). This song means so much to me as a writer and just as a person in general, it speaks my greatest truth on the topic and I hope that others can believe in the words as well.

What message do you want to deliver through your music?

I want to talk about topics that others may be afraid to talk about, and I want to normalize having conversations about political issues, body image issues, and mental health. These are the topics that are important to me, so I just really want to start the conversation with my audience.

What does performing make you feel?

Performing is exciting! I love getting to see the connection that fans have to the music, and I love getting to talk to people after the shows and really get to know them.

How would you define country music?

Country music is the truth explained in simple yet beautiful terms. I think country is all about honesty, and some of my favorite songs come from the genre.

What have you been working on? Any upcoming projects?

So many upcoming projects! I've been writing a ton lately for my next full-length project, I'm really excited to finish going into the studio and getting all of these songs recorded.l

What do you want to accomplish as a human being?

I want to make the world a better place, and I think my purpose on earth is to do that through music and storytelling. I'd love to make people's lives better just because there are so many obstacles that can make them worse, and just to be that bright spot in someone's day would make me feel fulfilled.

In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?

Ah, this is a great follow up question! I think equality is important, everyone deserves to have the same opportunities to fulfill their dreams and their purposes and I'd want to find a way to help make that happen.

What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?

I heard the quote "Connection is better than perfection" somewhere recently,  and I think that's stuck with me. It's all about connecting with people and striving to be better in that space, not necessarily always hitting the right notes or saying the right things.
