Introduce yourself - where are you from?
Hey! My name is Sophia Angeles, and I’m a pop singer-songwriter from Sedona Arizona, currently living in Nashville.
What's your story?
Music has always been a big part of my life, my mom is a music therapist so I grew up with her playing music around the house a lot. There are videos of me singing when I was 2 years old and I started taking vocal and piano lessons when I was 5 years old. My mom taught me guitar and ukulele when I was 10 and that’s when I started writing full songs. In highschool I began playing professionally at hotels and events and I still do that for work here in Nashville full time. When I was 19 I moved to Nashville on my own and since then I have been pursuing music and my artistry 100%.
When did you start feeling connected to music and art?
I remember always loving the way music made me feel and feeling so inspired by it, but when I started writing my own songs that made my connection to music and creativity stronger than ever.
What gave you the confidence to be an artist and release your original music?
When I first moved to Nashville I didn’t really know what I wanted my sound to be like and I wrote with a lot of different writers and producers but nothing was really fully clicking. Last year I wrote my first single “Interested” and once I heard the final vocals and production, I knew it was something I had to release. I didn’t think anyone besides my friends and family would listen to it at the time so it’s crazy that it now has millions of views on Youtube lyric channels and has ended up really connecting with people.
Who was the first person to ever believe in you?
I would say my parents because they have always been so supportive of me and really believed in my art.
"Miss You More" is your new single - what's the story behind this song?
I wrote this song with Jared Minnix last year at a time when I was feeling really lost in the process of trying to get over someone. I had it set in my mind that if I could just start liking someone new I would get over this other person but my plan ended up backfiring and making me miss that person more. I brought the concept and hook to Jared and we wrote and finished the song together that day.
You worked with Matthew Boda on this song. How was it like to collaborate with him?
Matthew has done my previous two singles and I absolutely love working with him. Last year close to the time I wrote “Miss You More” I went out to Kansas City to meet and write with him in person and during that trip we recorded the vocals for it. I knew it was a special song but having him believe in the song as well really made me want to release it. Matthew was recently on NBC’S Songland and it’s been awesome seeing him get the recognition he deserves. I feel really lucky to have him as my producer.
What did you feel when writing this song? Could you describe us the songwriting process?
The concept and hook came to me after a date with the new person I was seeing. I was trying so hard to be into him but my heart was totally somewhere else. Starting the writing process of this song really made me realize I had to end things with him because I knew in that moment I wasn’t actually ready to jump back into another relationship. I remember just sitting at my piano and singing the line “Everytime I’m with him, it just makes me miss you more” and knowing that I had to face the truth to finish the song.
What message do you want to convey through this song?
For me this song was about being honest with myself and not ignoring my true feelings. I realized that if I didn’t give myself the time to fully heal from my other relationship I would just be leading someone on and potentially hurting that person the same way I had been hurt. I’d love for this song to inspire others to be vulnerable and real with what they are feeling and just live in their truth.
What made you want to release "Miss You More" as a single?
This song is one of the most vulnerable songs I’ve ever written and even though a part of me is so nervous to release it, I love how it’s a song that really cuts to the truth. A lot of people I know have been in a similar situation to what I sing about in the song and I think it will really resonate with people.
What can you tell us about the artwork for the song?
Jacqueline Day is an amazing Nashville photographer and she took the cover photo and Zach Pigg did the cover design.
How often do you write songs?
I go through waves of writing, refining and then recording but recently I’ve been writing more than ever before. When I’m feeling really inspired it’s almost like I can’t stop writing. I went through a breakup this year and I ended up writing 14 songs in two weeks because I just had so much to process. I really love writing with other writers as well and I have some co-writes set up this month that I’m so excited for.
What appeals to you the most about creating music?
At first when I didn’t have any of my music out the biggest appeal was just being able to process my emotions and express myself. Now that I get to share my music with other people the process of releasing music holds just as much value to me as creating it. I love seeing my music connect with people and it still blows my mind when people reach out and tell me what my music means to them.
What does it mean for you to be an artist?
Being an artist is something I have always dreamed of doing since I was young so now having my music out in the world and seeing the positive reactions it has been getting has been a dream come true. My favorite artists have helped me get past really hard times in my life and I’d love for my music to do the same for other people.
How would you describe the Pop music scene in Nashville?
I think the pop scene in Nashville is awesome and very supportive. There are so many talented artists and writers here and I feel really lucky to be apart of it.
Any favorite current songwriters?
I love Julia Michaels, Lauv and this band MUNA that I love recently released an awesome album that has been inspiring me a lot lately.
What do you want to accomplish as a human being?
I just want to give as much love and light as I can to people and encourage myself and others to stay positive and keep going for their goals.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
I think the world would be a better place if people took the time to heal and process their pain. It’s really easy to just push through and ignore pain and trauma but I think if people allowed themselves to work through it, it would make a huge difference. I really believe the saying that hurt people, hurt people and that pain is a cycle that keeps on repeating if nothing is healed. I’m almost done with my degree in psychology and one of the biggest things I’ve learned is the importance of healing negative experiences so you don’t drag that trauma into new chapters of your life.
What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?
To be kind and loving to myself and by doing that I’ll keep being kind and loving to other people. I’ve been working on it more than ever this year and it has really made a big impact on my life. I realized it’s a lot of small things that add up, like setting healthy boundaries and watching my thoughts to make sure that I'm lifting myself up instead of bringing myself down.
