Loviet unveils debut single "Symbol of Love"
Canadian artist Loviet unveiled her debut single “Symbol of Love” on September 27th.
Originally known as Natalie Lynn, the artist recently rebranded herself as Loviet. Describing her sound as polished but chipped pop/rock, Loviet is introducing a promising debut single. Co-written with Hill Kourkoutis, “Symbol of Love” is about the period of time after a heartbreak.
“We were really inspired by experiences and people in our lives that weren’t necessarily our biggest loves or romantic partners, but those who had a big impact on us in other ways. How our emotions can be played on by others without those people even being aware of it,” explains Loviet.
With more releases to come, Loviet is a name you want to keep on your radar.
“Symbol of Love” is now available worldwide.
How would you describe Loviet, the artist?
Polished but chipped pop/rock.
What's the significance behind your artist's name?
I’ve been performing under Natalie Lynn since I was a teenager, working towards Loviet. The name is an anagram of the word violet, which stems from a line in a song I wrote.
"Symbol of Love" is your first single as Loviet, how does it feel like?
It’s pretty crazy to be sharing two really new and vulnerable things at the same time, but I’m stoked. Feels good.
What's the story behind this particular song?
Normally, a “Symbol of Love” is thought of as this positive thing from a person or a relationship. Something someone gives you to represent how much you mean to them, or their feelings for you. But in this track I was writing it from the angle that the symbol of love I was given from a person was actually all these negative feelings, bad vibes and memories that are still with me, and how when moving on, you have to bury them. This song is about the period of time after a heartbreak. We were really inspired by experiences and people in our lives that weren’t necessarily our biggest loves or romantic partners, but those who had a big impact on us in other ways. How our emotions can be played on by others without those people even being aware of it.
You worked with Hill Kourkoutis on this record - could you describe the songwriting/production process?
I met with Hill Kourkoutis at her studio on a rainy day in January for one of the first few co-writing sessions I was a part of after moving to the city. I had been pretty stoked for this write leading up, because I knew she was a dope female producer (which isn’t something I’d ever been paired up with before as the pool of females working in this role in the industry is smaller right now). But we really vibed with each other musically and both played guitar and had some relatable experiences throughout our careers. We ended up grabbing sushi and chatting about a lot of stuff pre-write so the inspo came to us pretty quick once we got back to the studio. The writing was really natural so when I hit Hill up to produce the single and record it with me, she was super down and it was a breeze ‘cause she’s such a pro.
What made you want to release "Symbol of Love" as your first single?
It’s just a really big gritty, feely song. The chorus goes for it, and that’s my favourite thing a song can do, but it’s also got a sadness and a strength in it. Sort of a battle between the two throughout the entire song. We all jammed to the demo that was tracked during the co-write session for a month or two before deciding to do this tune for real. After we incorporated it into our live show we were set, we just loved to perform it. The timing of the song and the intro to Loviet just went hand in hand. We wrote this song in the winter, so it's really a good time of year for us to release this song now in fall, after the summer's out and people are a little more into this pace and feely vibes.
What can you tell us about the artwork? What was the inspiration behind it?
The artwork was created by Daniel Tal (Vox Future) and the photography was shot by Joshua Best. We are so stoked to have worked with this amazing team, including Eric Boudreau who helped us out with the flames!
I actually met up with Daniel to talk about this project at a local record shop. We were sifting through the records picking out which ones we both dug and we came across this ridiculous 70’s album cover of a naked woman holding a flaming electric guitar (true story). It was pretty badass until we found out the chick wasn’t actually in the band, and it was just a bunch of dudes - classic, but we were both kind of like, “what if…” and “wouldn’t this be insane?” And of course we got inspo from the OG Jimi Hendrix flaming guitar shot <3
Daniel was wicked to work with, and he was a really big part of the entire launch and rebrand for Loviet. Everything needed to be authentic and Daniel was a master at helping us meld the vibe from our raw live show with our clean mod style for this single.
What is the ultimate goal for Loviet?
Right now, since we’ve gone live with Loviet, it’s just a straight shot from here to release as much music as possible and hit the road :)
What advice would you give to anyone who'd like to work in the music industry?
Work together and collaborate often! It’s a really amazing feeling to share a process with anyone creatively and on the same wavelength. It’s also okay to not always fit in, you can find your people somewhere. Learn from everything or take away some good from it. It may not always seem like it at first, but with a lot of experiences that happen you can look back on later and realize OH, that’s why that happened, and future you will value it more I think!!
What do you want to accomplish as a human being?
I just want to be a kind person, connect with as many people as possible and contribute something through music and art while I’m here, that will hopefully help people or make them feel something!
What biggest life lesson have you learned so far?
Go with your gut is a really good one.
