Introduce yourself - what's your story?
My name is Sam Lassner and I was born and raised in New York City. I love making all kinds of music, eating all kinds of food, and drinking sh*t tons of coffee.
How would you define Prince Fox, the artist?
Amorphous, mostly. I feel like the project has been through so many iterations of itself since I’ve started it, that now I just want to put out cool music you can sing along to, cry to, and sometimes even do both of those while dancing in the club.
"Same Love" is your new single. What's the story behind this song?
I wrote this song on a writing retreat in Nashville at the Spotify Secret Genius Studios with Chaz Cardigan and Dylan Ander. It was our second song of our short 4 hour session, and from the moment we wrote it it felt special to me. I really thought it captured the essence of falling out of love with someone, whether its a friend, or significant other, etc. I produced about 20 different versions of the song until I came up with the most recent version that finally felt right to me.
You worked with Chaz Cardigan and Dylan Ander for the new single. Could you describe us the songwriting process?
Those boys are wild and I love em. Chaz is one of the most naturally gifted people I’ve ever met, with the work ethic to match. Dylan is super quick with lyric ideas, and always has a smile and positive outlook when rethinking and reimagining lines and ideas for songs, which helps any session move along.
Production wise, what was the inspiration?
I love old Blink 182 & Simple Plan records and I wanted to capture that guitar / emotional essence of the song but beef it up into something that could work both in a club or in your bed sobbing with ice cream.
What made you want to release "Same Love" as a single?
It made me feel something. I have written and produced hundreds of songs this year alone, and for me I really want to put out the ones that make me truly feel.
What do you like most about this song?
The guitar parts for sure.
What can you tell us about the artwork?
When I was thinking of the visual direction for this project, I approached my buddy Sam Setton and told him I wanted every art to be an interpolation of something nostalgic from our childhood, to match the sonic quality behind most of these records. Sam is a brilliant artist and musician, but also a visual designer. He really pulled through for me across the board.
You worked with numerous artists in your career - what are you looking for in artists when working with them?
I like working with people that have something to say, and want to make people feel something; whatever that feeling may be.
As a producer, what equipment and software do you usually use?
I am an avid ableton user, and I always have some sort of Universal Audio & Sennheiser gear with me wherever I go.
What makes a "good" song?
The listener / consumer dictates that, I believe.
As an artist, what do you want to accomplish?
I just want to make people feel things with my music, in whatever forum I can. Whether it’s live or on streaming services, I just want as many people as possible to feel my music.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
I think the world would be a better place if people didn’t think of the world around them as everything being absolutely one way or the other. There is grey area and middle ground to everything and everyone, and if we could just see that the world is not in black and white, but in full and nuanced color, and be a bit more compassionate and understanding towards each other’s human condition, things would be a lot better.
2019 is slowly coming to an end, what lessons did you learn this year?
You get what you put in to things. Relationships, work, cooking, cleaning etc - whatever effort you put in, 99% of the time you get back out.
What did you accomplish this year?
I am just trying to grow up and be better every day than I was the last. I often replay events in my head from the past or over imagine and theorize about the future, and this year I realized that all I have the power to change is this current moment.
What are your goals for 2020?
I just want to keep growing and working hard.
