Drea Marilyn

Drea Marilyn releases new single “Everything To Me”.

Produced by John True, the new single is a cover from New Zealand band Lips, originally released in 2012.

“It's my go to song when I'm feeling down. The opening line gets me every time. 'It would mean everything to me if we could take a holiday, because you and I bone tired every night isn't my idea of play', says Marilyn.

The Seattle-based artist is also part of the band Drea & The Marilyns and recently released a single with ZKRY titled “Nothing Special”.

“Everything To Me” is now available worldwide.

Hi Drea, How are you? What have you been up to since our first interview?

Thread!! I'm okay thanks, I'm still getting used to living here in Seattle. I've been working with a few friends on a couple projects, and I have a band now.

"Everything To Me" is your new single. What made you want to cover this song by Lips? When did you discover this song?

It's one of my favorite songs of all time. I love the lyrics so much and I love the way Lips voice sounds. The beat is so sexy. It's my go to song when I'm feeling down. The opening line gets me every time. 'It would mean everything to me if we could take a holiday, because you and I bone tired every night isn't my idea of play'. It's strange how that's been my mindset or mood for this past decade, and I'm sure many could relate.
I learned about the song through an internet friend. We initially bonded over the fact we both taught overseas for a little. We then proceeded to share music we love.

Production wise, what was the inspiration behind it? How was it like to collaborate with John True on this particular song?

That very same friend in the previous question I mentioned suggested I should cover it. Production wise, I wanted to stray a little bit from what I was used to and experiment. John True was the perfect person to work with for that, he's very imaginative and open-minded.  We have a handful of other songs together and by far this was my favorite.

What do you like the most about this song?

As far as the original goes, I love the lyrics the most. The music is also excellent. The favorite part of cover that John and I worked on definitely has to be once we get to the last chorus. I love the swelling synths and I love how turbulent the track ends up sounding.

What can you tell us about the artwork?

The artwork was a nearly untouched photo taken from my band's official photographer and good friend Amelia Morrison. She took the picture during the shoot of our music video. We had the fog machine going and I was given direction to look distraught, which came very easy to me.

What message do you want to deliver to anyone going through mental illnesses?

YOU ARE ENOUGH. YOU ARE LOVED. You are more than you're giving yourself credit for. You are not alone.
This is something I struggle to tell myself daily. I've been struggling as of late myself so believe me when I say I'm telling myself this too.  There's a Mexican proverb that I remind myself of every day.
"They tried to bury us; they did not know we were seeds".

2019 is coming to an end, what biggest lessons did you learn?

Be kind to myself.

What did you accomplish this year?

Releasing 2 singles after a year hiatus, “Nothing Special” which is a song by ZKRY and myself and Everything to Me. I co-wrote a music video that's out next year, writing a couple more. My band Drea & the Marilyns recorded 2 new singles with Phil Petersen of House of Breaking Glass with many more to come. My band got to gig all over Washington state this year.
But most importantly, I started taking my health more seriously.

What are your goals for 2020?

To be kinder to myself. I'm going to both listen to my body and figure out when I need to rest without running on fumes but also let go of perfectionism and release new music to share. Personally, I want to volunteer in my community a little more.
