"Hole in the Wind" is your new single. What's the story behind this song?
I’m not sure there is much of an actual story behind the record. It’s more of a place or a feeling than a story or event and it’s kind of centered around this ever-present feeling of numbness and a feeling I’ve had since I was a kid that I had some sort of purpose here but I sadly, wouldn’t be here long; as if I was only here to serve this purpose and than leave.
When did you start working on it? Could you describe us the songwriting/recording process? Who produced it?
I actually started working on this record months ago and it took months and months to finish after it was written because I started it from a four-bar guitar loop. So I basically wrote and recorded the song, sent it to my homie, N.a.t.h.o. in Munich to add a bunch of piano to it, which took about a month in itself because me and him added a TON of different piano ideas. Than after that I arranged it and sent it to my homie, Fla.mingo in New York to add a bunch of his own production to it. Once Fla.mingo got done with it, I took his production and re-arranged a lot of it and actually ended up completely re-arranging the entire song. It was a lengthy process.
This song is different from your past releases. What made you want to do something different for this particular song?
I wanted to do something really fucking honest. The creative process is a delicate thing and I think it’s really easy for artists to get caught in this dangerous mentality of always considering the response/reaction to your art. It’s detrimental to the purity of creation and no one can create anything pure and honest in a state of fear or desire like that; fearful of rejection or desiring of acceptance.
With this record I wanted to really forget about the outside response. I wanted to dig deep and give a piece of myself that was truly unfiltered.
What did you feel when writing this song?
I felt very sad while writing this song. I remember crying a whole lot while I was writing these thoughts down.
How do you feel today?
I feel good today. I always feel good.
What made you want to release "Hole in the Wind" as a single?
I knew I wanted to release one more single. I actually had 3 or so songs ready to go but “Hole in the Wind” ended up being the one that I wanted to go with it the end.
2019 is slowly coming to an end, what lessons did you learn?
I’ve learned more this year than probably any other year in my entire life. Most importantly, I’ve learned that if you want to make good art and do your best work, you need to be calm and relaxed. There is nothing more important.
What did you accomplish this year?
A lot. I think I set out at the beginning of this year just wanting to release a lot more music, and build my fan base more and I think I definitely did that.
What advices would you give to anyone suffering from chronic illnesses?
I would say be aggressive. Be aggressive in finding help or finding something that helps you. You really have to be active in that.
What are your goals for 2020?
Releasing more music and better music. The best music.
