Born and raised in Los Angeles, Gia Woods revealed her debut single “Only A Girl” in 2015. After reaching over 10 millions on her first music video, Woods got to perform at major events such as LA Pride, and collaborated with Norwegian DJ & producer Matoma on hit single “Heart Won’t Forget”.

Following her single “Jump The Fence” released on February 1st, the singer/songwriter is now delivering the new smash pop single “New Girlfriend”. Written by Gia Woods herself, Steph Jones (Sabrina Carpenter, Panic! at the Disco, Bea Miller),Trey Campbell (Bebe Rexha, Ella Mai, Maggie Lindemann) and produced by DECCO (Joacim Persson and Sebastian Arman) , the new single is a fun and dynamic record blending pop and electro.

Introduce yourself - where are you from?

Hi! I’m Gia Woods and I’m an artist born, raised, and currently living in Los Angeles.

What’s your story?

I grew up in a very old fashion Persian household. So I pretty much had to learn everything on my own, and for me music was my outlet. I got into music once I found my sister's guitar in her room, and from there I started writing songs in my bedroom as a kid. I was also in my school choir from middle school to high school. That’s where I got scouted by management from an open mic night my choir would throw. I’ve been working with them since I was 17, and have been writing songs and curating my sound since!

Growing up, what were you passionate about?

I was obsessed with wanting to learn how to play the guitar. After school I’d run home and watch YouTube tutorials to teach myself. I loved Green Day and wanted to know how to play like Billie Joe Armstrong haha.

Could you describe your childhood a little bit? Any favorite memory?

I remember specifically going to Denmark with my whole family to visit my brother. It was the first time we had all been together since he moved there! I fell in love with Copenhagen and it’s somewhere I’d definitely like to maybe live one day. It’s so beautiful there.

When did you decide to pursue music as a career?

During my senior year of high school I decided to fully pursue music, it was between that or applying to college! And it’s crazy because the month I got scouted by my manager was the same month I had to make a decision on which school I wanted to go to. Timing is everything ;)

Who was the first person to ever believe in you as an artist?

My sister has always been my biggest supporter. She’s really the person who pushed and believed in me the most. I wouldn’t be here without her!

What was your first experience in the music industry? What lessons did you learn since then?

I remember working with these two producers who wanted to sign me to a production deal, but I just had a gut feeling that it wasn’t the move...and now looking back, I’m so happy I didn’t do that haha. It was definitely not a good deal!

What gave you the confidence to become an artist and release your original music?

Music has always been such a huge passion of mine and I’m not really good at anything else, so I knew I had to just go for it and see what happened!

How would you define Gia Woods, the artist?

I feel like in a lot of ways it was an alter ego that allowed me to imagine all my insecurities as separate from myself, which helped me grow into the person I always saw myself becoming.

You’ve just released your new single “New Girlfriend”. What’s the story behind this song?

I think the lyrics pretty much say it all haha! You’ll have to listen to get it ;)

Could you describe us the songwriting/recording process for this song? Who did you work with? When did you start working on this song?

I worked with Steph Jones, Trey Campbell, and Joacim Persson. I originally heard the demo in a label meeting, and as soon as I heard it I knew exactly what to do with it. So I booked the session and rewrote some of the lyrics. Then we shot the music video a month after. I’m all about openness so I loved the message behind it because it’s true I think we've all had a weird thought or feeling about something that we normally wouldn’t share or say out loud.

What do you want people to feel when listening to your music?

I want them to feel empowered and inspired and know that they’re not alone!

Who’s helping you shape your artistry and sound?

Since signing with Disruptor I’ve been working very closely with my A&R Jennifer. She’s helped me so much with curating my sound and picking the singles to release. At the end of the day it’s my decision, but I love how we have similar taste and she’s good at giving constructive criticism so we work really well together!

What message do you want to deliver to the LGBTQ community?

I grew up thinking I was “weird” or that there was something wrong with me, but that’s not the case at all! So my biggest message would be own who you are and don’t be ashamed!

As an artist, what do you want to accomplish?

I hope to be a voice for anyone who can relate and help them in any way. Growing up I didn’t have really any role models in the music and LGBTQ communities, so I hope I can be that for someone!

In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?

Communicating with an open mind and compassion!

What biggest lessons have you learned as an artist and as a human being?

Never be afraid to trust your gut. I used to over think so much and get so many outside opinions that I started to lose sight of what I really wanted. Once I stopped doing that, everything I was worried about fell into place cause I just trusted myself!
