Introduce yourself - where are you from?
My name is Brooke Alexx with 2 x’s :) I’m originally from northern New Jersey, just outside of NYC.
What's your story?
Growing up, I was heavily involved in musical theater, but in 8th grade, I discovered Taylor Swift and realized there were other outlets for singing. I soon began playing guitar and writing my own songs. After studying contemporary music in college, I moved to Nashville to pursue my dream.
What's your first musical memory?
Probably watching American Idol as a family every week!
Growing up, what were your favorite records to sing along to?
When I was in elementary school, my dad bought The Best of Sheryl Crow CD and kept it in his car. So every time my sister and I got in, we’d blast our favorite 4 songs and scream the lyrics as we flew down the highway.
Could you tell us about your first experience in the music industry? How old were you?
When I was 7, I told my mom I wanted to be a singer. She took me to an open call audition to get an agent and I remember singing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” for the judges. I ended up getting signed and introduced to a vocal coach for the first time.
When did you realize you were good at what you do?
When I first met my childhood vocal coach, she was extremely busy with other clients and barely made time to meet me. After hearing me sing, however, she was adamant to have me as a student.
What gave you the confidence to release your original music?
I’ve always been a go-getter, so as soon as I had access to studios in college, I knew I wanted to release music. I’ve since taken those songs down, but they were very enlightening experiences.
You're about to release your new single "Bored". What's the story behind this song?
I was seeing this guy who was super hot, but never had anything interesting to say - over text, specifically. I would try to joke around and he just didn’t get it. That week, I went into a writing session with Chase Coy (aka CHSR) with the idea!
Who wrote/produced the song?
Chase Coy was my cowriter on the song and it was produced by Yuval Maayan.
What made you want to release "Bored" as a single?
After Chase and I made the demo, it didn’t feel quite right, but I really loved what we had so far. So I reached out to my producer, Yuval Maayan, to see what he could come up with and he sent me back a DOPE track that is very close to what you hear now, and when I heard it, I was confident “Bored” was going to be my next single.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want my music to exude confidence and strength, and make listeners feel understood.
How's the pop music scene in Nashville? Any artist(s) you'd like to recommend?
It is definitely growing rapidly. Check out my friends: Rosemary Joaquin, Karen Hardy, and Jared Minnix!
What appeals you the most about songwriting?
The ability to encapsulate experiences that otherwise wouldn’t be documented.
What does singing make you feel?
It makes me feel free and powerful!
How do you want to be remembered for?
For telling it like it is.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
Honesty.
What biggest lessons have you learned as an artist and as a human being?
There’s room for everyone to succeed. Keep working hard, so you don’t ever have to look back and regret not putting in more work.
