London-based artist Jaz Ellington revealed his new single “Don’t Run” on May 10th.

Produced by Nayla Nyassa, the alternative r&b record is about a toxic relationship.

“All communication and trust has broken down, hearts have been shattered and it’s make or break time. And in the midst of all the madness a monster has been created. But somewhere deep down inside they both want to make the relationship work,” says Ellington.

Starring Harold Obodai and Yasmine Alice, the music video was directed by Steve Brockerton.

After his performance on The Voice UK, Ellington has played various shows and has shared the stage with major acts such as Lauryn Hill and has collaborated with Will.i.am on an exclusive NASA project.

“Don’t Run” is now available worldwide.

Introduce yourself - where are you from?

Jaz Ellington. London, England.

What's your story?

South London born and raised singer/songwriter with big dreams, continues to climb this mammoth of a mountain called The Music Industry. It’s a tough ole journey but I couldn’t see myself doing anything else even if I wanted to.

When did you start feeling connected to music and art in general?

From the age of 15 I started to take music much more seriously. No more was it just about singing my most favourite songs. I discovered that I had a new outlet. Audible diary entries. Knowing me is knowing my songs really.

Could you tell us about your first experience in the music industry? What did you learn since then?

My first experience in the music industry would have to be my very first gig as Jaz Ellington just after Brit School. I remember thinking to myself… 'this is harder than I thought’. It’s the whole putting yourself out there into a vulnerable space to be judged. I was really shy for many years but as I continued, my confidence grew. I loved it.

How did your sound evolve over the years?

I started off as an artist that liked to sing all genres. I'd be vocally me on near enough any style put before me which doesn’t always work lolol. I suppose growing in music, you continuously learn more about yourself as an artist. Your likes, dislikes. Things you need to work on. It’s all fine tuning really. I started out hardcore soul, to having no idea what genre I sat in to then end up in Alternative RnB which is where I’m at now.

How would you describe your music today?

Alternative RnB/Soul.

How would you define Jaz Ellington, the artist?

An unpredictable, singing nightmare at times lolol… Nah… An honest fun loving singer/songwriter that loves hats and beads.

You've just released your new single "Don't Run". What's the story behind this song?

The song is about a toxic relationship of any kind on the rocks. All communication and trust has broken down, hearts have been shattered and it’s make or break time. And in the midst of all the madness a monster has been created. But somewhere deep down inside they both want to make the relationship work.

When did you start working on this song?

The song was written on February 19th.

Nayla Nyassa produced the single. How was it like to work with Nayla? How did you meet?

Nayla is the first producer that ever took me seriously. I’ve known him for many years. He is actually the producer of the my first EP titled So… this is me & ‘Light up the room’. I’ve worked with some incredible producers to date but if I had to pick the one that got me and my sound the most it would have to be Nayla. Absolutely incredible, a blessing to work with.

Production wise, how did the inspiration come about?

It’s always organic with me. I write from where I’m at, from what I’m experiencing/experienced. I went through a mad situation to the end of last year that nearly took me out. And so I used it in the song.

What do you like the most about this song?

The feel.. it actually sounds like a storm and yet it’s still soulful… love it.

What can you tell us about the music video?

Twas a very cold and muddy day lololol.

What do you want people to feel when listening to this song?

I hope people are taken somewhere else when they listen. Transported to a different place in time, a place of beauty. Everyone’s place is different. I also hope that the song brings them the same healing it brought me.

What appeals you the most about making music?

It’s all art… It’s the whole idea of making something out of nothing. Mind blowing.

From all the experiences you've lived so far, do you have a favourite memory?

Opening for Lauryn Hill. However I think I might have embarrassed myself a little in all honesty. You know when you do something dumb that’s out of character in the presence of a hero…. yeah well that was me and that’s another story lol.

In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?

Free Gin.

What biggest lessons have you learnt as a human being and as an artist?

Humility is EVERYTHING….. Take risks, it’s all apart of the process….. And be prepared to step out of the boat and walk on water… Believe.
