Eulene

Singer/songwriter Eulene revealed her latest single “Sleeping with a Ghost” on April 2nd.

Co-written and produced by Angelo Petraglia, “Sleeping with a Ghost” is about facing and listening your personal truths.

“The timing of this release feels coincidental with the moments of these times and may resonate with many, considering the worrisome and alarming uncertainty of days and our nights. We are in a slow-down where hard and also beautiful truths are surfacing in us all,” says Eulene.

Exploring subjects such as power, feminism and love, the Nashville-based artist will be releasing her debut album this spring.

“Sleeping with a Ghost” is available now.

Introduce yourself. What’s your story?

New York City born and raised. I’ve been in and around performing arts all of my life. Studied to be a vocalist, a dancer, an actor, and eventually combined it all into creating my own music.

How would you define Eulene, the artist?

Curious, experimental, and seeks the unpredictable.

"Sleeping with a Ghost" is your new single. What’s the inspiration behind this song?

This song was born when my own personal truths, the tough ones, asked of me in the dark of night, in the stillness of sleep, to listen up.

Could you describe the songwriting/production process behind this song?

For the songs on this EP, including this one, I wrote entirely to a rhythm track (no instruments) before building the track. This was an idea I had as a way to break away from my own songwriting habits and allowed me a lot of freedom to experiment.

Who helped you create it?

I collaborated with Angelo Petraglia on this song. He and I have played music together over the years and have a strong musical connection. He gets my vision and creative process and he was willing to do a lot of experimenting with me.

Jeremy Lutito brought the programming we had to the next level. John Mark Painter arranged and recorded the string parts, and Ernesto Olvera-Lapier engineered my vocal sessions, where it all came together.

When did you start working on “Sleeping with a Ghost”?

It’s an idea I had for a while that kept coming back to me. I finally decided to sit with it and flesh it out.

What made you want to release this song as a single?

The decision came from feedback I was getting. I was encouraged to do so. The vibe also felt appropriate to the current state of the world and all we are going through.

What do you like the most about this song?

There is a hush about it that is juxtaposed with a lushness— the expression of the vocal arraignments combined with the strings arraignments. I love these two primary elements of the song.

What can you tell us about the artwork?

Early on, I had a clear idea of myself in silhouette. I wanted to capture something that had a haunting beauty to it. Soft and dark, but ethereal, too. I reached out to some people I worked with, MATULA,  and asked them if they were interested in doing the shoot and together we brought it to fruition.

What message do you want to convey through this song?

I’m not looking to deliver a certain message. I want people to get what they feel from it. I want to see what people take away from it— how they are moved by it. It’s likely to be different for everybody. I’m sure people relate to it in their own way.

What biggest lesson have you learned since your very first release?

Stay the course. Seek your tribe. Be tenacious.

What does it mean for you to be an artist?

I love being an artist and creating my own expression. I get to wake up every day, make my own hours, and be creative. The flip side of that also means it’s all on me.  I’m the writer, the singer, the manager, my own glam squad, day-to-day stylist, I.T. department, broadcast center, etc. So organizing and planning is key.

What are your thoughts on today's global situation? How are you holding up?

I welcome interviews like this one— a great escape from the nightmare rolling 24/7 on the news. The indefinite nature of it all is super challenging. The death tolls are harrowing. I have COVID dreams often. It's all-consuming, so I’m trying to be creative every day; trying to be physical everyday; trying to learn something new everyday; trying to be quiet and listen everyday. This is shaping all of us in ways only time will tell.

What message do you want to deliver to the world?

Stay curious.
