CAPPA

LA-based artist/songwriter CAPPA reveals new single “Change My Mind” in collaboration with Yuppycult.

The electro-pop single is about how fickle love can be. “Sometimes it feels like someone in the relationship is always trying to have the upper hand and I’ve definitely been guilty of being a passive-aggressive dater in the past. This song is a light-hearted look at the "on and off" that can be a part of a new relationship,” explains CAPPA.

The Philadelphia-native has been featured on tracks for major electronic artists like SNBRN, TELYKast, and Justin Caruso.

CAPPA will be releasing her new EP this summer.

“Change My Mind” is now available worldwide.

Introduce yourself — what's your story?

My name is Carla Cappa, AKA CAPPA, and I’m based in Los Angeles, CA. I grew up outside of Philadelphia where I started songwriting and playing in bands. At the age of 18 I moved to Nashville to start my project and have since released two EPs and a number of singles!

"Change My Mind" is your new single. What's the inspiration behind this record?

I wanted to record something light-hearted. There’s a few heavier songs that are going to be on my upcoming EP, but this particular track is about a relationship that I was in at the time that was always back-and-forth. It always felt like a tug of war. If he was happy, I wasn’t sure I was… and when he wasn’t, I was fighting for it. It’s about how fickle love can be.

Could you describe the songwriting/production process? What made you want to collaborate with Yuppycult?

When we went into the studio to write we didn’t know if it was going to be a pitch record for other DJs or not. But over time it just felt like such a CAPPA song that we decided to just put it out!

What made you want to release "Change My Mind" as a single?

It’s a light-hearted, dance-y song and I think we can all use something like that right now. Between the organic guitar elements and dance-drops, I feel like it sets up my EP well.

What can you tell us about the artwork?

The picture was taken by a photographer named Alex Justice, and then a girl from online named Andrea Lux put it together. She does cool mixed media art.

What do you like the most about this song?

I like the drop a lot. We actually redid it a few times but I really love what we landed on.

You lived in Nashville for a while and then moved to LA. What are the main differences between the music scenes in Nashville and LA?

They are really very different. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact differences, but the Nashville music scene is definitely a lot smaller and — some will fight me on this — but it’s definitely a lot friendlier, in my experience. Los Angeles is a little more cutthroat but it makes you push yourself hard to be heard.

How does songwriting make you feel?

I’ve done it for so long now that I really don’t know much of a life without it. I guess I’d say that it feels like a form of therapy for me. Listening to a song mix back after spending a long day writing it is the best feeling in the world to me.

What advice would you give to young songwriters?

Learn how to make your own demos and record your own scratch vocals. The music world is changing rapidly and that’s really important in today’s world.

What biggest lesson have you learned since your very first release as an artist?

Success isn’t linear, it’s a lot of ups and downs. And, there will always be someone doing better than you so don’t even bother comparing.

As a human being, what do you want to accomplish?

I’d like to become a successful musician, then a philanthropist, then open up a nonprofit and a dog rescue.

What are your thoughts on today's global situation? How are you holding up?

I’m okay! I handled it really badly the first few weeks. I am not good at being alone and have a pretty crazy life, but I’ve adjusted and the process of slowing down has actually been nice. My dog loves it.

What message do you want to give to the world?

As a musician, I want to leave a positive message that you can get far if you work hard enough. Just as a general message outside of music, one of the most important things I’ve learned lately is “this too shall pass.” There is never too difficult of a time that you can’t get through. You just have to keep pushing.
