Chris Grey

Chris Grey recently dropped his latest single “I should be happy” and it’s another banger. I already loved his single “No More” but this new one is even better. It’s still pop and r&b, and it’s still very unique. Chris Grey has his own musical signature and that’s really cool to hear. His music video is also out now so make sure to check it out because it perfectly reflects the song.

“I should be happy” is now available worldwide :)

Hey Chris, how are you? What have you been up to?

Hey I’m good! I’ve been working a lot on music while also trying to enjoy the very short Toronto summer.

"I should be happy" is your latest single - what's the story/inspiration behind this song?

“I Should Be Happy” is about the internal struggle of feeling guilty for not feeling good, even though things are going well. I was just starting to see someone, and everything was going well but for some reason I just didn’t feel as good as I thought I should. I was overthinking everything so much I couldn’t even stop to enjoy things. I think this song is in some ways even more relevant now as life returns to normal, which as much as we’ve all been looking forward to, can also come with a lot of anxiety.

Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this single? Who helped you create it?

I wrote this song with Allegra Jordyn who’s been a big collaborator on my upcoming music. I started the song alone one night and all I had was the hook and the beat. I brought it to her later that week at our co-write and she loved it, so we finished it together.

What did you feel when writing this song?

I felt kind of relieved because I finally put what I had been feeling for the past few weeks into words.

What's your favourite thing about this single?

I think my favourite thing about the song might be the crowd vocals at the end. I wanted it to sound like a crowd was singing it at a concert, so Allegra and I recorded us singing it 30 times in different voices while jumping up and down. It was really fun to make, and it ended up sounding exactly like a big group of people!

What can you tell us about the music video?

I had the concept for the music video about 6 months before I shot it and it was the first video I have been involved in that turned out exactly how I had envisioned it! It took me forever to find the right location and by the time I found it, I had to book it for the next weekend and get all the supplies ready. Buying New Year’s supplies in July wasn’t easy! We rented a truck and brought everything to the warehouse and met the crew and cast there. We had the warehouse rented for 4 hours and hadn’t even started filming 3 hours in! We were still coordinating how to do 8 set changes in less than 3 minutes. Once we got one good run through it totally took the pressure off and the vibe was a lot more relaxed after that. We did 8 takes and used the final one.

What made you want to release "I should be happy" as a single?

As soon as we wrote this song, I knew it had to be a single. I had the idea for the video around the same time, so I also wanted to make that.

What do you want people to feel when listening to this song?

I want people to feel heard and understand and help lose some of the guilt about not feeling great even  though things are going well in their lives.
