ELBA

The first time I heard ELBA’s new song, it reminded of Robyn and Madonna’s dance era. I instantly LOVED what I was hearing. “You Do You” is an anthem that has the ability to make us feel good and powerful. Lyrically, the new single offers an empowering message: standing up for who you are and not letting society dictate our life. I couldn’t relate more to this song, especially today.

The production reminisces on those classic dance/pop records we know but also offers a unique approach. I always pay attention to productions and I absolutely love it when we hear something we didn’t expect: I wasn’t expecting the record to end with that guitar :)

ELBA brought those timeless pop melodies to the record which created an ultimate smash.

“You Do You” is a record you will play on repeat and it is now available everywhere.

Introduce yourself - what's your story?

I'm ELBA, and my music is a blend of catchy indie pop with personal, contrasting elements at its core. It's a mix of vulnerability and festivity, addressing heavy subjects like stress, jealousy, and sexism. My latest album, 'Teardrops & Blind Spots,' delves into my journey of recovering from stress. 'You Do You,' my latest single, represents a pivotal moment in my career and life. It's an empowering anthem that encourages embracing individuality and self-belief—a much-needed shift after battling negative thoughts during my stressful period.

"You Do You" is your new single - what's the inspiration behind this song?

'You Do You' draws inspiration from a pivotal moment at a party where someone questioned my unconventional approach to music and life. It became a catalyst for me to stay true to my path. The song is about acknowledging and embracing your very own unique human composition. About believing in your own abilities - especially when life seems tough and unfair - and above all, it’s about daring to trust and listen to your own inner voice. Otherwise, you limit yourself, maybe even to other people’s expectations, making the negative define your path. 'You Do You' is the result of my own experiences but also a universal story about standing up for who you truly are.

Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this song? Who helped you create it?

I collaborated with a talented team of musicians and producers to breathe life into 'You Do You'—songwriter Astrid Cordes, Nikolaj Poulsen, and producer Mads Bunch Johansen. During our first session, we wanted to create an uplifting and energetic track inspired by artists from the 2010 era like Robyn and Lady Gaga, focusing on crafting a huge and grandiose chorus. We explored the concept of contrasting my desire to be a flamboyant popstar with my insistence on remaining a countryside girl. The goal was to craft snappy and catchy melodies, which became the driving force behind the track.

What's your favorite lyric on "You Do You”?

'Long distance dancing to the radio

In my kitchen

In my fake fur coat

with the deer outside my window'

What does this song make you feel?

'You Do You' empowers me and reinforces the importance of trusting my instincts and following my unique path in shaping my career and life in general.

What made you want to release "You Do You" as a single?

I wanted to release 'You Do You' as a single because it was important to come out with an empowering message.  It signifies a new chapter in my life, breaking free from others' expectations after a period of holding onto negativity.

As an artist, what is the hardest part? And what is the best part?

The hardest part is often navigating the challenges of the music industry, like breaking through the noise. The best part is connecting with fans through music, knowing that your art has, hopefully, a positive impact on their lives. Furthermore, I just love creating music and playing concerts.

How's it like to be a woman in the music industry? What message do you want to give to women out there?

Being a woman in the music industry can be challenging, but staying true to your vision and supporting other women is essential. My message to women is to never compromise authenticity and believe in their abilities, even when they face doubts. Connection and solidarity among women in the music industry make us stronger.

What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?

Today's music industry has evolved significantly, with more opportunities for independent artists. If I could change one thing, it would be to ensure fair compensation for artists, especially in the digital streaming era.
