Isla-Maria

The very talented Isla-Maria recently released her brand new single “No Doubt” and it’s an instant pop/r&b banger. Everything about this song is perfect. From the catchy melodies, to the production, to the mix, to her warm vocals. The r&b influence is what caught my attention in the first place. “No Doubt” is definitely a GOOD song.

Isla-Maria definitely has some great potential and I’m sure we will hear more records from her very soon.

“No Doubt” is out now !

Introduce yourself - what's your story?

My name is Isla-Maria Corbeil. I live in a small town in Ontario, Canada and I am 15 years old. I started doing music when I was just a baby. I would always play with my dad, as he is a musician. I’ve been dancing since I was three and played sports here and there from time to time, but music has always stuck with me the most. I started getting more serious about it when I was around 12 years old, and ever since then, I have just wanted to put myself out there and show people the music I love to make.

What did you grow up listening to?

I grew up listening to a lot of jazz music. My parents always played jazz music around the house. Their favourite is Billie Holiday, I love her so much. It was such a calming thing to hear around the house and it was different from what other parents played, so it made my home feel like home.

When did you know you had to be an artist and release your original music?

Ever since I’ve been younger I always wanted to be a famous singer and write my own songs. I’ve been writing random little songs forever! I never really knew where I would go with it, but now I know this is my path.

Who was the first person to ever believe in you?

The first people to believe in me as a singer was my parents. My dad has been a musician since he was my age and always influenced music on me. My mom has been encouraging me to do my music my whole life. She used to record me for hours while I would sing my heart out with my dad, and even though I didn’t sound the best at the time, she told me I was the best she’s ever heard.

"No Doubt" is your new single - what's the inspiration behind this song?

I wrote No Doubt with my Singing Coach Alyhia. We wrote the song shortly after one of my long-term, on-again-off-again relationships ended. During our relationship, it seemed like this boy had all the power in the relationship, and this just wore me down. I never felt like I was his priority and when I realised this, I was really sad. This song is about wanting to feel like you are your partner’s number one, taking your power back, and standing up for yourself in a relationship.

Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this song? Who helped you create it?

Last summer I wrote my first song with my producer Myles Erlick. He is such a talented person, he acts, sings, dances, and is an amazing producer. He taught me so much and really piqued my interest in songwriting. To start the process for No Doubt, Myles and I started texting back and forth about creating different beats. I described to him what I generally had in mind for the feel of it and then he would send me a bunch that he thought would work. It only took a week or two before we had something that I loved. Aliyah and I were able to write the lyrics so quickly because we work so well together. We work together very naturally and respect each other, so it makes it easier to produce songs that we are both stoked about. We started off with just a track, then we worked together to make it all happen. I live in a small town two hours north of where Myles lives, so we drove down to his studio to record a few songs. It’s always such a fun experience working with him. Myles is so positive and the sweetest person ever.

What did you feel when writing this song?

I felt good, powerful but also angry. Talking about power can lead to so many emotions and just thinking of what I was writing about made me feel so passionate about it.

What's your favorite lyric on "No Doubt"?

My favourite lyric in No Doubt is probably “watch how you talk to me”. I love this lyric because, in reality, I am not a very forward person and will very rarely ever speak my mind when I want to or should. I always let people talk down to me and I think it’s good to be able to tell someone that I know my worth.

What made you want to release "No Doubt" as a single?

I wanted to release this song as a single because each of my singles has a little story behind them, and this song adds to the story of all the singles.

What can you tell us about the artwork?

My inspiration for my cover art for No Doubt is a more vintage look. I love the look of disposable cameras and the vintage aesthetic of laundry mats.

As an artist, what is the hardest part? And what is the best part?

As an artist, the hardest part is getting out there. For some people, they just go viral from a video on tik tok, but there are so many artists out there and it can be super hard to get yourself out there. The best part of being an artist for me was finding my sound. I was recently in LA and I wrote two new songs that I have never been so proud of because they were so me, and it made me so happy because other people get to hear them too.

Could you list a few records that influenced the music you are making today?

1989 by Taylor Swift. Ctrl by SZA. And all of Justin Bieber.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

The best device I’ve gotten was to live in the moment, it made my life so much more fun.

In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?

I would help solve world hunger, and stop people from littering so much. It makes me so sad to think of all the people who don’t have homes and can’t eat when we can help them out if we tried.

What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?

My biggest life lesson so far is - “If you don’t take that risk, you can miss out on the best experiences in life,” - my dad.
