Sam MacPherson
I’ve been following Sam MacPherson since “No Bad Memories” and I feel like his songs are getting and better. “Routine” is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard and his new single “Last Minute” is a soulful/pop record you’d want to play on repeat. One thing I love about him is the emotion he delivers through his vocals. That emotion brings some true authenticity and honesty to his music. Being able to share emotions through music is one of the most important things in my opinion, and Sam has that.
I believe he will keep getting better every day and I’m sure his music will be heard by a huge number of people as the years go by. This is my second time interviewing him and I’m hoping to feature him many more times :)
But for now, let’s stream “Last Minute” - out now :)
Hi Sam, how are you? What have you been up to?
Hey Virginie! I’m well thanks for asking! lately it’s been music all day everyday. My ears are a bit tired but I am having so much fun.
"Last Minute" is your new single - what's the story/inspiration behind this song?
This song came from one of those moments that I think so many people encounter. Where love and logistics intersect. It’s that funny conversation people have when they’re falling in love but “it’s the wrong time” or one party is “not ready”. And then you’re forced to put love up against your hesitations. I feel like almost always, if it’s genuine , love wins.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this single?
I wrote this song with my two endlessly talented friends Julianne Hope and Adam Yaron. We wrote it over zoom in a few hours after bringing them a very rough idea I had. Then Andy and Adam really took it to a new level with the production as arrangement.
What did you feel when writing this song?
Whenever I’m writing retrospectively I try to put myself inside the moment that I’m writing about. And that type of reflection, for me at least, comes with so many strong emotions and feelings as if I was back in time and back in the place I’m writing about.
What's your favorite thing about this single?
I love the fact that the song is such a commitment to the bittersweet feelings I had at that time in my life. I was falling in love as I was moving across the country. It was hard to know what to think at that time, but I think this song gave me a lot of clarity in that respect
What made you want to release "Last Minute" as a single?
I think it stands out as the pivot point of my EP. It’s a favorite moment in the story that I’m trying to do justice.
What can you tell us about the artwork?
The artwork was shot and created by Maxwell Goldberg who also shot the “Routine” cover and who is the creative director for the entire EP!
What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?
The music industry is full of wonderfully driven people. As a whole, and like any industry, I think there’s some work to be done. I’d love to see songwriters get the recognition as well as the compensation they deserve. I think that’s changing is happening as we speak.
