Laurel Taylor

I am only discovering Laurel Taylor’s music but it wasn’t hard for me to fall in love with her songs. Her voice is the first thing that caught my attention. She has powerful and soulful vocals that perfectly fit with the music she is making today. Blending country, rock, soul and blues, Laurel Taylor’s music offers memorable melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Her latest single “Old House” was released last month, and it feels nostalgic, beautiful and emotional. The country record was co-written with Jay Speight and Amanda Kinner. A must listen.

“Old House” is now available everywhere.

Introduce yourself - what's your story?

I was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. I grew up playing softball and singing in church and school choirs. I play almost every instrument by ear and I quickly found my love for music which moved me to Nashville right after high school graduation. That’s where my journey began!

What did you grow up listening to?

I loved listening to the Gaither Vocal Band with my grandmother… specifically “Sometimes It Takes A Mountain”.

When did you know you had to be an artist and release your original music?

I knew music was what I was supposed to do when I realized that I had no fear of crowds. In fact, I thrived on them! I also began writing real music about my personal experiences which touches so many people in different ways.

"Old House" is your latest single - what's the story/inspiration behind this song?

I saw a sign that said “bringing up my past is like robbing a house that is empty.” Everybody has a past. It’s not about forgetting it, it’s about choosing not to walk back thru the doors and into that lifestyle.

Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this song? Who helped you create it?

I originally wrote this song about 3 years ago with my mom. Then I took it to two other writers, Jay Speight and Amanda Kinner, and we rewrote it again! It’s the most vulnerable and personal song I have ever written so I wanted to make sure it was right.

What's your favorite lyric on "Old House"?

I told myself so many lies, I started to believe them.”

What did you feel when recording this song?

I felt a huge sense of peace and letting go of things I knew that I needed to let go of.

What can you tell us about the artwork?

The artwork shows a picture of an old house in the distance if you look closely!

As an artist, what is the hardest part? And what is the best part?

The hardest part is getting people to truly listen to your music. The best part is the impact it makes once they do listen to it!

How's it like to be a woman in the music industry? What message would you like to give to women out there?

As a woman, you are put in a box vocally, stage presence and musicianship. There is so much out there! Loretta Lynn said it best… “I’m not a big fan of Women’s Liberation, but maybe it will help women stand up for the respect they’re due.”

What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?

I would like to change the messages to more positive and encouraging stories.

What does singing make you feel?

Singing usually takes me back to what the song is about. It’s a vulnerable place for me.

What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?

Learn when to say no and it’s okay to put up boundaries.

In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?

Biblical truth !!!
