Ocean Heights
Ocean Height’s new single “Prob” is definitely the kind of songs I love to listen to on a daily basis. I remember freaking out the first time I heard “Prob”. It was THE song I needed to hear at this very moment. I was looking for something soulful, memorable and refreshing and that’s what this song is all about. Co-written with Max Pignetti and Kirolos Sadallah, the new single is the perfect Spring / Summer record. So make sure to check it out !!
I’m still discovering his music but I can’t wait to see/hear what’s next for him. A promising talent for sure.
“Prob” is now available worldwide :)
Introduce yourself - what's your story?
I’m Justin, I’ve been making music under the name under Ocean Heights for about 4 years now. I’m from New Jersey but I live in Philly and I make music in a construction site with my roommates.
What did you grow up listening to?
I specifically remember my first musical loves being Ricky Martin’s Livin La Vida Loca and the Backstreet Boys. So I always loved pop music but I definitely gravitate to more hip hop and soul inspired stuff these days.
When did you start making music?
I started making music in high school, mostly just writing cringe lyrics in class and making GarageBand beats but after the song Out the Way came out and got a million streams I started feeling like it was something I could really make a career out of.
Who was the first person to ever believe in you?
My parents always were super supportive of my music career even when it meant me dropping out of school to pursue it, also my uncle Torrey is a real one for teaching me guitar. I don’t think there’d be an Ocean Heights without him either.
"Prob" is your latest single - what's the inspiration behind this song?
I’m constantly trying to find a new way to keep Ocean Heights sounding fresh so I worked with my brother Max Pignetti to cook up Prob. It’s just a summertime banger about deteriorating relationship between a man and his Amazon Echo.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this particular song? Who helped you create it?
Since we live in a construction zone in Philly, the process is kind of rushed since every take might be interrupted by a jack hammer or a construction bol playing El Sonidito on a Bluetooth speaker. We just kinda vomit ideas down and I sing over them and it’s hot. My homie Max and I produced the beat and we had a lil help from my homie Kirolos on the lyrics. He’s a real poetic type bol.
What did you feel when writing this song?
Parched.
What's your favorite thing about this song?
sLiDy BaSs.
How's it like to release new music as an independent artist in 2021?
It’s nice being in charge of your whole journey but it can be scary or hopeless when you think about what you’re up against to get your music out there vs someone with label support.
As an artist, what is the hardest part? And what is the best part?
For me I think every song I drop is my last song because I just hold myself to crazy standards so that can be really hard when it’s been months and I still don’t have a song I feel is worth releasing. But when I finally do end up dropping and I see all the support on social media or people singing along at shows, it’s super worth it.
What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?
Seems like a bunch of people in cloaks that meet in the woods and sacrifice small animals to me. I try not to think about it too much.
What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?
Take care of yourself.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
Universal healthcare, federally legalized weed and Pitbull for President.
What message do you want to deliver to the world?
Be kind and rewind, each stream of Prob is worth one prayer and Pitbull for President.
