Scarlett O'Hara
I’m so happy to get to feature Scarlett O’Hara. I grew up listening to metal/rock music and I’ve been trying to find new amazing bands to listen to. Scarlett O’Hara is definitely the band I was waiting for. They’re not only making good music, they’re also delivering empowering messages throughout their songs and visuals.
Their latest single “Talk to Me” is about mental health. It invites people to ask for help, but more importantly, it invites people to talk to the ones who are struggling. Conversation is important and “Talk to Me” definitely makes us think.
Thank you so much Scarlett O’Hara for your music and for what you do and thank you Moises. I’m truly grateful for this conversation.
“Talk to Me” is now available worldwide :)
Introduce yourself :)
Hi, my name is Moises Lopez, I'm from the McAllen Texas band known as Scarlett O'Hara.
When did you start making music together?
So the band has been around since about 2008 but I didn't start making music with them until about 2019 when we were writing the songs "Friction" and "Obsessive" at Eric Ron's studio in L.A.
What was the biggest challenge when you first started as a band?
When I joined I'd have to say writing music. Honestly, it was a crazy process at first. Everyone has their wants musically and we didn't completely know what direction we wanted to take as a band. Over the years it's gotten so much easier. By the time we put out "Talk To Me" the writing process became second nature.
Who was the first person to ever believe in Scarlett O'Hara?
Logan (The guitarist) I'd have to say because he's the one that kept it alive for so long. He's also the main reason why we are where we are with it. I mean I know it takes the rest of the band and all that but he never let the idea of the group die and brought us all together to do this.
"Talk To Me" is your latest single - what's the story/inspiration behind this song?
So when I was writing this song I was always hearing the "I'm so sad no one understands me" type of songs that were being put out. I thought about writing a song that said more of the message of "I'm here, and I get that things suck sometimes so please if you need to just Talk To Me". I'm sure all of our closest friends and family would like us to tell them our problems rather than hold onto them and hurt ourselves or others. Please do not be afraid and speak up if you need help.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this song? Who helped you create it?
So I had the chorus melody and the intro riffs to the song before entering the studio with Andrew Baylis the producer. He and the rest of the guys kinda just took it from there as I was in the vocal booth doing my thing. Andrew is a Godsend in putting the ideas together.
What did you feel when writing this song?
With all the talk of mental health and how it affects everyone, it felt good to be able to have a song with this message. If someone is feeling some type of way I would hope this song can spark them to talk to somebody for help.
What can you tell us about the music video?
It was shot by Wade Concienne. He's a friend I've known for a while and have gone to him for pretty much any musical help I need. The video portrays an astronaut that is lost like most of us. He's struggling to find a signal to call for help. It has a lot of cinematic detail and CGI and I really had to up my acting skills.
What do you want people to feel when listening to "Talk To Me"?
In a perfect world, I'd just want everyone to feel good. I want them to listen to this song and understand that there is no fear in feeling weak, feeling lost, or feeling defeated in life. You're not alone in that. It happens to most of us more than you think. Do NOT be afraid to reach out to someone if you need help. Do not be ashamed about it. For the other side of the coin, please every now and then be sure to check up on your family and friends and just let them know that you are there if needed. Sometimes they might not wanna open up about things, that's where you can help in that. I know most of us aren't licensed therapists but we can suggest that we'd aid in that process if need be.
As an artist, what is the hardest part? And what is the best part?
The hardest part about being an artist at least for me is self doubt. I get stage fright still until this day but I do my best and work on that. The guys really do help a lot when it comes to that. The best part is when people sing your music back to you while you're on stage. That is an insane feeling.
What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?
I don't really have too much of an opinion on it. I guess I would like to see more bands talk about things other than heartache but damn does that sell well. Even I ate that up during a breakup.
What advice would you give to artists out there?
Don't be afraid to try something somewhat out of your comfort zone even if it's not within your style or genre. Explore, experiment. Also, don't be afraid of failure because that is gonna be your greatest teacher.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
Cheaper gas prices haha. Cheaper everything honestly! A cure for back problems, nicer customers at work, and less bitchy management.
Sufficient staff, No traffic. We'd probably discover aliens before any of that happens (laughs). In all honesty, I guess maybe if we could all just get along on some kind of level.
What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?
Do not be afraid of failure. It happens, to some of us more than others. Life doesn't owe any of us anything, if you fall down you get yourself back up again no matter how long it takes. It's the best way to give the middle finger to life itself.
What message do you want to give to the LGBTQIA+ community?
Remember to love yourself and who you are. You are so much more than just your sexuality or your gender identity. Do NOT hurt yourself or others if you are feeling lost and confused. Talk to close friends, family, or you can even Google for help if needed. Much love!
