I first interviewed Zosia in 2018 for her empowering single “Overthrown”. My blog was still called the Music LIFT back then, and I was honored to get to feature such an amazing artist on my blog. Her music is honest, emotional, vulnerable, beautiful and that’s what I love the most about her. Her visuals are always incredible and they always match completely with her music. And that’s what Art should be all about. She’s a true Artist and she knows exactly what she’s all about. Her new single “The Alter” is honestly mind blowing and it might be my new favorite Zosia song. As always, Zosia is not afraid to express her personal stories and her vulnerability into her art. We need more artists like her.

Go stream “The Alter” now :)

Hi Zosia, how are you? What have you been up to?

Hello! I'm doing pretty well. I've been busy with a lot of creative projects. Besides music, I also work on graphic design and illustration. I've also been able to spend a lot of time with my family during quarantine which I'm grateful for.

"The Alter" is your new single - what's the story/inspiration behind this single?

I wrote The Alter after a really difficult death in my family. I felt inspired to write a song to help me process my feelings and also to help my family grieve. I wanted to create a piece that could help keep her memory alive.

When did you start working on it? Who helped you create this single?

I started the melody a couple years ago and then decided to use it for this song in the summer of 2019. I had some really amazing musicians help flesh out the recording. James Gordon worked on the production, Robin Arenson added piano, and Karen Hall recorded the cello. I knew I wanted live strings on this, and Karen did an amazing job.

What did you feel when writing this song?

I definitely cycled through a lot of emotions while writing it, but in general it brought me comfort. I felt hopeless at first because I didn't know how to help my family members through their grief. When the song started to take shape, I felt grateful that I could offer this art to them.

What made you want to release "The Alter" as a single?

Once I finished it, I wanted to get it out as soon as possible. I think it has the potential to help others who are grieving, and the pandemic is causing so much grief right now. The Alter is also part of an EP that I'm releasing soon.

What can you tell us about the visuals for this single?

I wanted to incorporate water and nature in some way. I've been quarantining in the Bay Area with my family, so I shot the visuals at Pacifica beach with the help of my sister. I'm so happy with how it turned out considering we're not that experienced in videography.

What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?

There are so many amazing things about the industry now, like how easy it is for anyone to share their music globally. I love being able to connect and collaborate with people all over the world. But I think we need to figure out a way to compensate artists better, especially for streams.

What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?

Working on your mental health is the most important thing. Once you have your mental health in a manageable place, every aspect of your life will improve.

What message do you want to deliver to the world?

If you remove fear from the unknown you are only left with wonder.
