Hi guys ! How are you? What's The Ivy's story?
Hey! We’re doing great. We met back in 2016 at music production school in Oklahoma City and 3 months later we were releasing our first song together. We both had a knack for songwriting and were just really keen to get our ideas out there. After a year of working together, we released our first song “Gold,” which really helped us gain traction.
"Don't Fall Asleep To This" is your latest single - what's the inspiration behind this song?
Every writing session we go into we like to bring an idea or two just as a jumping off point. For this session that we did with Lyncs, Wyatt brought in a lullaby-like melody he’d created and had named “don’t fall asleep to this.” Little did we know the time that would become the name of the song too!
When did you start working on this song? Could you describe the songwriting/production process behind it?
We started working on this song last Summer with Lyncs during a songwriting trip in LA. We used the lullaby piano sound Wyatt made and then kept adding to it and writing melodies on top of it. Next thing we knew, we had something really cool on our hands!
What made you want to work with Lyncs on this single?
Our managers originally connected us for a songwriting session. It ended up being such a natural and seamless songwriting experience, and it quickly turned into a duet with Lyncs and Wyatt.
What's your favorite thing about this single?
Shawn: My favorite thing about the song is how seamlessly Wyatt and Lyncs’ voices flow together. I also like all the little moments where we added unique sounds in.
What message do you want to deliver through this song? What do you want people to feel when listening to it?
We hope that people can connect with this song and the feeling of longing, especially when it comes to the struggles of a long distance relationship. But, we also want people to be able to shake their bodies to the upbeat style of the song!
In your opinion, what makes a good song?
Shawn: In my opinion, any song that can convey emotion is a good song.
Could you list a few records that influenced the music you are currently making?
Shawn: Currently I’ve been influenced by Porches, MJ Lenderman, Medium Build, Oklou, Rachel Chinouriri, and Djo.
What can you tell us about your upcoming tour?
Well, we’re about to head on tour this Spring with our friend—and collaborator on this song—Lyncs, and we couldn’t be more excited about it. We’re really looking forward to seeing all of our fans, both new and old!
What are the biggest challenges you have to overcome during a tour? And what's the best part about touring?
Shawn: Tour is like a big summer camp experience, so it’s important to try and keep everyone in high spirits! The best part is all the little wins we get to celebrate together along the way!
What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?
Shawn: A placebo only exists because we believe it does.
In your opinion, what would make the world a BETTER place?
Shawn: I think if more people focused on taking care of their own health and spreading love to others, the world would naturally reflect that positivity.
