Vanessa Marie Carter
Country artist Vanessa Marie Carter has just released her new single “Yours To Lose”. Co-written with Shantaia Poulin and Ryan Sorestad, the empowering single was inspired by a breakup that one of Carter’s friend went through.
Catchy, uplifting and honest, “Yours To Lose” is a feel good record - perfect for the Summer :)
“Yours To Take” is now available worldwide :)
Introduce yourself - what's your story?
I've been a singer/songwriter for as long as I can remember! I've been in Nashville for about 7 years now and I absolutely love everything about this town. I grew up listening to country music, so it will always be a huge part of my life... but I listen to everything!
How would you define Vanessa Marie Carter, the artist?
I would say she's been a long time in the making. It's taken me a lot of years, and a lot of hard work to find my sound and feel confident in my talent. I always hope my personality comes out in my music... I'm pretty light hearted and funny.
"Yours To Lose" is your new single - what's the inspiration behind this song?
This song was inspired by a weird breakup one of my girlfriends was going through. If I hear something that inspires an idea, I'll usually write about it!
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this single? Who helped you create it?
I wrote the song with two of my friends, Shantaia & Ryan. I actually think this was our first write, and it was super effortless. There's something really magical about a first write going that well!
What did you feel when writing this song?
I wanted this song to have a confident power in it... and I think we created that!
What's your favorite thing about this single?
How honest it is. I think everyone can relate to feeling left in the dark.
What made you want to release "Yours To Lose" as a single?
I made the decision really quickly and easily actually. I guess when you get that gut feeling, you roll with it!
How's it like to release music in 2021? What different steps an artist needs to take before releasing a new single?
The music industry changes daily! Different platforms mean different opportunities and ways to release. For me, I just make sure I start by loving the song. Then I'll share it with a few people I trust. Ultimately one of the coolest things about being an independent artist, is you have the final say in creative direction.
As an artist, what is the hardest part? And what is the best part?
I think for me, the most challenging part is self doubt. I have struggled with 'Imposter Syndrome' big time! But the good has always outweighed the bad. Any of those low moments are quickly forgotten when the best part happens... and for me, that's playing live!
What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?
If I could change one thing...it would probably be just creating more awareness to music fans about how little money writers make. It always seems to shock people. But the truth is... until you make a great living in this business, you make almost nothing. But music is one of those funny careers where you can't do it for the money.. that can't be what drives you.
What biggest lesson have you learned since the beginning of your career?
Trust your gut.
What advice would you give to young artists?
Play live as much as you can. For me, playing in bars for years was the best school I ever went to. Pay attention to who you put your trust in. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself.
Besides music, what are you passionate about?
So many things! I love to cook!! (and i'm pretty damn good at it). I also love fashion and beauty. I love to travel. I'm also really passionate about acceptance and kindness. I believe God put us all here as equals, and the only way to live a peaceful, healthy life, is by being kind to each other. <3
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
Acceptance.
What message do you want to give to the world?
You only get to do this once, do it big!!
