"brokenhearted" by joan

My friend and I have been spending our days discovering new music and sending each other’s new music since 2006. We like the same songs and we rarely get disappointed. A few months ago, he sent me one of these joan’s songs. I loved it and found it super nostalgic but at the same time very innovative. I grew up listening to 80’s records, boy bands and late 90’s + early 2000’s pop music. This band is a mix of all of that with a modern sound. Their own unique sound. After hearing “try again”, I listened to their Cloudy EP for a bit but I first didn’t really pay attention (my bad !!) and didn’t take the time to study their music properly (yes i study music).

Spotify played me one of their songs two weeks ago and I thought “ok let’s give them another try, and let’s study their music for real this time”. And I did. Definitely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in 2020. Not even a joke.

Their Cloudy EP has been on repeat since then. It’s brilliant. Nostalgic. Innovative. Inspiring. Honest. Cool. Fun. Emotional. Refreshing. It’s honestly the only record I listen to these days. “magnetic” and “cover girl” are bangers. “brokenhearted” is the song I can’t stop listening. I probably play it at least 24 times a day. This song is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard in my entire life. It has some of the best melodies ever created and I know for sure that this song will become one of my favorite songs of all time.

Oh, and the version on that party cloudy EP is just fucking epic.

These guys really know how to make music. They are smart and unique. They don’t sound like anyone/anything else these days and I believe a lot of artists are being inspired by their sound. But no one can do it better than them. It’s one thing to want to go back and create music inspired by the past, but it’s another to execute these things so perfectly. It seems so effortless to them. Their melodies are my favorite thing about them. I hear a lot of great stuff in pop music, but joan has this ability to create these timeless and amazing melodies. My mind is blown every time I hear one of their songs. I am honestly out of words right now - it’s how GOOD they are. And on top of that, their production is fucking incredible. I wonder how long they take to create one single song (sorry I didn’t study their whole life) but it must be very interesting, fascinating and inspiring to watch them work. WHAT A BAND.

Anyway, I’m going to end this now before I start writing a whole book about their songs.

But before I go… Best discovery of 2020? joan. 100% sure.

Thank you joan for what you do.

k bye.

And happy holidays :)
