Zac Taylor
I can’t tell you how many times I listened to this song before the official release, but it’s been on repeat for days and I believe it will continue to be on repeat for a long time. “Stay In The Night” represents some of the things I enjoy the most in music. I love the 80’s vibe, the soulful vocals, and the pop/r&b influences. The melodies are timeless. The production is brilliant. “Stay In The Night” can honestly become one of my favorite records of all time.
Zac Taylor delivered an amazing and promising debut single and I’m so proud I got to interview him. It’s only the beginning and I’m sure he has plenty more records to offer :) But for now, go stream “Stay In The Night” on repeat :)
Introduce yourself - what's your story?
I grew up in a very small town in New Zealand, you could say my dreams outweighed the opportunities so I’ve always felt like I needed to get out and travel the world which I have been blessed to be able to do through music. I started singing when I was 6 years old & since then my passion for the art has only grown, evolved and become a whole lot deeper.
How would you define Zac Taylor, the artist?
A natural born story teller.
"Stay In The Night" is your debut single as a solo artist - how does it feel like to release your first single?
This one’s special. It has been a long time coming, something I’ve wanted to do my whole life and although I’ve released music as part of a group this is my first solo release. I’m both excited and nervous.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this single? Who helped you create it?
This song started in a bedroom, I flew to Melbourne and met two good friends of mine (Rory Noble & Cam Noble). For some reason ‘Dancing Queen’ by Abba was in my head the day of so we drew inspiration from the sounds and feelings of that record. I have plenty of stories to tell but it is always amazing being in a session with someone else like Rory to bounce ideas off, he was able to help me articulate what I wanted to say in a simplistic way also having Cam there on the keys to provide the right feel for the record was crazy.
What did you feel when writing this song?
I drew on a past relationship that I was caught up on. I felt like I still needed that person around to be myself.
What's your favourite thing about this song?
Besides the production, I love the chorus. Its’ simple, it’s heartfelt and it is catchy.
What made you want to release "Stay In The Night" as your debut single?
It fits perfectly into the story that I’m trying to tell.
What can you tell us about the music video?
It’s simple, buts it’s beautiful. I feel like anyone that watches it will get something different out of it to the next person.
What is your goal for this first single?
It’s an introduction, I want people to feel something from this record that makes them want to come along for the rest of the ride because this is only the beginning.
What did your experience in Titanium teach you as an artist?
It taught me how fast paced this industry can be. I learnt a lot of myself and who I want to become as an artist. I’m thankful for all the success and accomplishments I achieved with Titanium. I’d love to perform with them again one day but for now I’m focused on getting some plaques of my own and becoming the best song writer and artist I can be.
What does it mean for you to be an artist?
It means everything. I love creating, I love performing and I love connecting with people through something as beautiful as music.
What's the hardest part about being an artist? And what is the best part?
I think for me the hardest part about being an artist is staying out of my own head. I can be my biggest critic and my biggest fan. The best part is that connection you can have with other people. Making someone feel something.
What do you want to accomplish professionally and personally?
I want to reach as many people as possible, collab with artists who inspire and push me to be better. Another number one would be incredible too and of course I’d love to tour the world.
What major life lesson have you learned this year?
This year has been a massive shake up for everyone. I learnt that no matter what happens in my life I always have music to turn to. It has helped me through some dark times and guided me back to better days.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
Honestly, Peace and love. Soo much darkness in our world so we all have to play our part to shine some light where we can.
What message do you want to give to the world?
Be yourself, follow your dreams and love more.
