Disco Shrine

I have so many things to say about Disco Shrine (best artist’s name ever btw), but I’ll try to keep it short.

We met a few years ago in LA after I first interviewed her for her single “Up In The Air” (which is one of my favorite songs ever). She’s definitely one of the kindest person I’ve ever met in the music industry. She’s a breath of fresh air. Her art is authentic, colorful, real and empowering. She’s a hard worker, a passionate, a creator and a risk taker. Getting to know her has been nothing but a blessing. Watching her grow as an artist is inspiring me every day.

I’m so excited for her to release her debut EP xoxo, disco. The first single “Future Memories” is now available and it is my second favorite song from Disco Shrine. Make sure to check it out :)

It’s been a minute since I last interviewed her, I hope you will enjoy this little interview :)

Hi !! How are you? What have you been up to?

Hey! I've just been quarantining and making music and art.

"Future Memories" is your new single - what's the story behind this song?

Future Memories is a song I wrote in December after becoming really infatuated by this person I was dating. We hadn't known each other for a long time but we instantly clicked and so this song is about falling for someone you don't know and imagining all of the future memories you could create together.

How was it like to collaborate with Ceci G and Liz Nistico on this single?

Ceci G and Liz Nistico are two of the most talented people I know. This was our first time making music together as a trio, but when we got into the studio it felt like everything happened so naturally; the song just came together so fast. It honestly felt more like a fun time with friends then it did a normal studio session.

What made you want to release "Future Memories" as a single?

It's honestly just such a fun song. I was able to perform it live once before quarantine, but I've been wanting to release it since we made it. It's the first track off my EP and just feels really fitting because it's so vulnerable. The main hook is "you don't even know me, do you wanna know me?" So, I think it'll be a fun introduction into the Disco Shrine world.

What's the inspiration behind the music video? Who directed/filmed it?

The music video was directed by Nicole Lipp and edited by Marti Hoyos. I've collaborated with them a lot in the past (we did the Alright and Power videos together as well). They're my mini dream team. It was shot on a 90s camcorder throughout a mostly-empty, locked-down, Los Angeles. It captures that nostalgic feeling of being young and in love and a little bit punk.

What can you tell us about your upcoming EP?

My debut EP is called xoxo, disco and chronicles my dating life in LA over the past year: everything from love at first sight and heartbreak to feeling empowered on your own and having friends with benefits. It's definitely the most vulnerable I've been in my writing and while there are still the classic disco dance tracks on it, I also experiment with different sounds and more laid back summer vibes too.

What are your thoughts on today's current situation around the world and on the Black Lives Matter movement?

I think it's definitely a crazy time in the world right now. Usually when there's this much unrest, that means change is bound to happen soon. It's really incredible to see the activism that's been sparked and all of the support the movement has had. Hopefully we can see some tangible changes for the better.

What major lesson have you learned from these challenging times?

I think the biggest lesson is to take a step back and appreciate the things and people in your life that matter and to not be so hard on yourself.

What message do you want to give to the world?

Stay positive, don't lose hope. There's always a light at the end of the tunnel <3
