CAMI PETYN
Cami Petyn has released her new single “Tired”.
Co-written with Ben Cohen, the dark-pop single is about being frustrated about your own insecurities. “Tired' pulls influences from both modern pop and old-school jazz creating a funky yet dreamy atmosphere. The lyrics sing of the frustration of feeling insecure which undoubtedly many of us can relate to.”
“Tired” is different from what we hear lately and that’s why I instantly loved the vibe of this song. I love how it sounds and I love the topic behind it. Cami Petyn delivered an edgy pop record with a true message behind it.
“Tired” is now available worldwide :)
Introduce yourself - what's your story?
Yoooo I’m Cami, I’m a proud cat-mom from a small surfer town called “Encinitas”. I’ve been obsessed with music my whole life but, I’ve always been too afraid of failure to really delve into it as an artist (I know, facepalm). But, back in 2018 I got out of a breakup and did the whole “I’m gonna make myself the best me possible” thing and the first thing I thought of was finally pursuing my dream of becoming an artist. I booked my first vocal lesson on a whim that day & told myself “if I hate it, I’ll never go back”. After that first lesson I decided there’s absolutely nothing else I want to do with my life but music & I’ve been viciously chasing that goal since.
How would you define Cami Petyn, the artist?
Hmmmm I guess you could say I’m kinda like yin & yang, considering I always try to bring light with my lyrics but I’m also very drawn to darkness in my visuals and sounds. So, I’m always trying to balance the dark & light, like yin & yang. Also authenticity always comes first for me as an artist.
"Tired" is your new single - what's the inspiration/story behind this song?
I wrote “Tired” during a period of my life where I was extremely insecure. I was constantly over-analyzing myself and stressing about the future until one day I realized how damn bored & annoyed I was of thinking the same negative thoughts. Out of frustration, I pulled out my lyrics books and wrote “I’m so tired of feeling so much”, and the rest of the song just flowed from there.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this particular song? Who helped you create it?
This song was one of those rare mysterious occurrences where your pen hits paper and the rest of the song just vomits out of you. I wrote the majority of it in that one sitting while singing over some random “dark pop” beat I found on youtube. And then I brought it to my producer, Ben Cohen, and we changed the chorus a couple times until we decided on the one we recorded. We were strangely indecisive with this song, constantly changing out harmonies and melodies so, the production actually took us a bit longer than usual but, it was a super fun process.
What did you feel when writing this song?
Quite literally so damn tired of feeling so much.
What do you want people to feel when listening to this song?
The song can have numerous meanings so, I want them to feel whatever the song makes them feel. But, to me the song feels like I’m finally taking a stance against my insecurities, so I’d love if the song inspired that in others.
What can you tell us about the artwork?
To me, being insecure is basically like laying in a dark abyss of potential “what if’s” lol. You get rid of one negative thought and another one comes creeping from the darkness to come after it’s prey, which is what inspired the album cover.
As an artist, what is the hardest part? And what is the best part?
Hardest part, ironically, is second-guessing myself. But, best part is definitely the feeling of a song coming together. I swear I get high off of the feeling of a song finally coming together, it’s exhilarating.
What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?
The industry needs more women in power. Period.
What does singing make you feel?
Alive.
What does it mean for you to be an artist?
I may have an extremist view but, to me it means to dedicate yourself to your art.
What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?
Nobody actually has it all figured out, we’re all just winging it as we go. Also, dedication and patience are essential to success.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
Art & empathy.
What message do you want to deliver to the world?
Follow your damn dreams, regardless if they scare the shit out of you.
