LEADR
LEADR has just dropped his new single “Hi, I’m Human” and it’s a song I’ve been playing on repeat before the official release. First of all, the topic of the song is so important. No matter who we are, we’re all human and it’s our job to be kind to one another and to accept each other for who we are. Second, the production is fucking incredible. In fact, it is so incredible, it makes me want to listen to the instrumental. Shout out to Gianluca Buccellati for killing the production. Third, the melodies are captivating and efficient, my favorite part might be the pre-hook melody. “Hi, I’m Human” is real and honest. I honestly think this song could be huge and I’m sure the song will offer some great comfort in people’s lives.
“Hi, I’m Human” definitely came out at the perfect time, and it’s important to have songs that remind us to treat each other with kindness. Congrats LEADR on this amazing single. Can’t wait to hear more :)
“Hi, I’m Human” is available worldwide :)
Introduce yourself - what's your story?
My name is Alexander Tang and my artist moniker is LEADR. I grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ in a Vietnamese-American household. I am Queer and proud. You can call me whatever pronoun you want and I respect any pronouns you wanna be called.
How would you define LEADR, the artist?
LEADR is an extension of myself. It is this authentic and wise being spreading love and light into the world through music, art, activism, and fashion.
"Hi, I'm Human" is your new single - what's the story/inspiration behind this song?
This is my love letter to all the bullies that hurt me in the past. I’m human, I’m just like you.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this song? Who helped you create it?
I wrote this song last summer in my bedroom and I started out with the chorus. From there, Joey Kurbanov, a super talented songwriter, helped me finished it. He’s so easy to work with and we just hit it off right away. One day, I was listening to Arlo Parks and I fell in love with her songs. I hit up her producer, Gianluca Buccellati, to help me produce the track. It started out as a dance record and I felt like it didn’t fit the tone of the song. Most of my experiences being bullied was set in the 90s and we went with that vibe.
What did you feel when writing this song?
It was healing and nostalgic.
What's your favorite thing about this single?
That this single is setting the tone for my new album. My songs are getting more vulnerable and I feel people can relate to them. I would love Billie Eilish to be a part of my new album someday. Even if it’s ohhhs or fart noises from her, I’m okay with that!
What made you want to release "Hi, I'm Human" as a single?
With the rise of Asian hate, it was the perfect time to put it out. I hope it will spread mental health awareness.
What can you tell us about the music video?
It’s my most vulnerable video I have ever made and I wanted to show the ugly side of humanity. When I was editing it with my co-director, Nima Firouzan, it was really hard to see me like that. I had to stop a few times because I was so emotional. I really went there and I want to show the audience that words can kill. I’ve experienced suicidal thoughts.
What does it mean for you to be an artist?
By expressing myself and using my platform to make a difference. For me, it’s therapeutic.
As an artist, how's it like to live in a city like Los Angeles?
I’ve only lived in LA for about 6 years and I love it. There is a sense of the artist community here that is willing to help each other. It’s beautiful and I feel there is more of a balanced way of life too.
What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?
The music industry is getting very saturated but there is music for anyone that speaks to them. The award system needs to change. I feel every artist deserves an award for their hard work. People don’t understand how much work it takes from creating a song to releasing it. We have to give props to the people behind the artist too.
What message do you want to give to LGBTQIA+ communities?
First I want to say, "Ily"! I am alive because of you. Second, to know yourself is within. Take your time, no one is rushing you. Implement a morning self-love mantra every day and tell yourself, “I am enough, I am loved”.
What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?
Lol, I just learned this last year and I’m still evolving. I’ve read this book by Eckhart Tolle called “A New Earth”. I’ve learned to be more present. Before of the pandemic, I was always on the go and hustling to the point of wearing myself out. Now, I’m making sure I have time to stop and smell the roses.
What are your thoughts on those recent hate crimes in the US?
Come on, it’s 2021! It’s unfortunate that this is still going on but on the flip side, I’m happy to know we are educating each other and sharing stories to build solidarity.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
No racism and a world without shame. More glitter and fairies! Haha.
What message do you want to deliver to the world?
Like BTS says, love yourself and be kind to one another. :-)
