Lucy Frost

Boston-native Lucy Frost composer/singer/songwriter recently revealed her latest single “To Pieces”. Produced by Nick Schmidt, the single paints the feelings of being deeply in love with someone but knowing in the back of our mind that this love sadly won’t last. On this record, the Los Angeles-based artist shares emotional & magical vocals with catchy melodies and sincere lyrics. “To Pieces” is a song that will offer some kind of comfort to those who are currently going through the same situation.

Lucy Frost has a new single on the way, but for now, let’s stream “To Pieces” !

Hi Lucy, how are you? :) What's your story?

Hello :) I am a composer and songwriter from Boston, MA, now based in Los Angeles. I’ve been in the music scene for a long time now, primarily working as a writer for other artists as well as pushing my own artist project this year, which I am most excited about!

"To Pieces" is your latest single - what's the inspiration/story behind this song?

The lyrics in this song are about experiencing a love for someone that you know is either bad or you, or is inevitable to fail. Kinda dark, laughs. But I think the emotion that comes with that was something I really felt at the time and wanted to release into this song. You can really relate to this sinking, gut-wrenching feeling when you hear the double kick hitting in the chorus and the building bridge section, all produced by Nick Schmidt.

When did you start working on this song? Could you describe the songwriting/production process? Who helped you create "To Pieces"?

This song came together very fast. Nick had sent me the initial idea back in June, and I immediately wrote to it. I think I had just come back from a trip to Nashville, so I was feeling especially inspired to write and had a lot of ideas ready to go. I wrote the whole song that night after coming home from LAX, all in one sitting.

What did you feel when recording "To Pieces"?

The chorus is one of my favorites I’ve written because It’s so catchy. The simplicity of it along with the hard-hitting kick drum and guitar, really give this song that gut-wrenching feeling we all get when falling for someone. When we recorded it, I wasn’t worried about all the minor details, instead I just had fun.

What can you tell us about the artwork?

My talented friend Camila Florez is a true goddess with film, she shot the covert photo which I think captures the soft/vulnerable aspect of the song really well.

What do you want people to feel when listening to this single? What message do you want to deliver through this song?

I want my listeners to relate to the feeling of loving someone so deeply, but knowing it won’t last. It’s sad in a way, and almost nostalgic, but in the moment you still feel that pull to them. I want others to have the same release of tension, guilt or whatever it is, while singing this song.

How do people respond to this song so far?

I’ve had a lot of friends and followers love the indie/pop sound of To Pieces. It’s a step further in the direction of the new music I’m creating, so the good feedback is very reassuring to me :)

What does singing make you feel?

I’ve always considered myself a pianist and instrumentalist, not a singer, but I’m starting to embrace it more.

What are your thoughts on today's social media? How does it impact your career?

I have a lot of torn feelings about social media. I think on one hand, it’s an incredible tool that has the ability to broaden your audience entirely. People from all over the world have heard my songs and that’s really cool. But on the other hand, it’s not for musicians. As an artist, it forces you to kiss up to the industry and become a marketer/influencer as well. I find this incredibly draining and more times than not, it takes a toll on my creativity. I think there’s a lot wrong with the music industry today, how streaming has affected musicians negatively, the role social media plays in ‘making it’ as a musician; it’s all very superficial. It’s important to learn how to separate that side of things from why we fell in love with music in the first place, but that’s easier said than done.

Could you list a few records that influenced the music you are making today?

Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan, Billie Eilish, Gracie Abrams, Hole, and Role Model are my biggest influences I think.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

It’s hard when your passion is also your career, so find hobbies that have nothing to do with making music. I love drawing and art, going to movie theaters and ordering the biggest popcorn they have, playing card games, spending time with my sister :)) All helps with the balance of things!!

What biggest life lessons have you learned this year?

Don’t set expectations for yourself! A lot of this year for me has been trying to plan out my entire life, just for it to go in a completely different direction, usually for the best. Sometimes you need to take a step back in order to move forward.

In your opinion, what would make the world a BETTER place?

Less screens, more face to face, real connections with people.

What can we expect to hear/see next?

I have a new single, “D Day”, soon to be released so stay tuned for updates on that !!

What's your goal as an artist?

Keep releasing consistently to grow my audience and start performing live in LA :)
