Introduce yourself - what's your story?
I am Milune, which means “I love you” + “moon”, I am a 19 years old singer, songwriter, and artist. I started my professional artist project almost a year ago, I try to create a safe space for anyone that needs it, and who escapes in music the same way I do.
"lunacy" is your brand new single - what's the inspiration behind this single?
“lunacy” is a song about enjoying the madness, letting go, and not being afraid to have fun and let go and disappear, the fact that struggling with mental health shouldn’t keep you from living your teenage years, having fun experiences, or having crazy experiences. Question people’s intentions, be wild, and enjoy every part of life, including the madness of life.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this single? Who helped you create it?
For this single, I worked with Benjamin Alasu, who is also a good friend of mine. I came to him with the idea for the song, I had most of it written and we finished it together. He helped my sonic vision come to life, I am very specific with what I like in my production style and he was amazing at exactly capturing what I was envisioning, taking all my crazy ideas and putting them into a song.
What’s your favorite lyric on "lunacy"?
My favorite lyric on “lunacy" is “some might say you envy me, bites like teeth”, I wrote it in a moment where I was imagining how it feels when people are sabotaging you, or envy you, and people treat you badly because they’re jealous when it creates that mad impulsive feeling because of these sort of triggered situations and I remembered it feels like someone biting into your skin, and you need to try to get their teeth out of your skin. It became the funniest lyric of the song, it has that slightly sassy feel, and at the same time, it’s very real.
What made you want to release "lunacy" as a single?
I wanted to get it out for the Summer, it’s such a great Summer song, you can listen to it full blast in your headphones, on your way to going out, or on your way back, when you’re out with friends or when you’re just enjoying the Summer, the warmth and the madness. So I needed to release it before the album.
What can you tell us about the artwork?
We thought long and hard about what the artwork should be and in the end, we thought that this one shot from the music video was definitely the best option, because it described that feeling, it had something creepy about it, but still kept the purity and the beauty of the music, it had that cool but still emotional kind of feel, and showing that madness through that picture which that moment captured, within a video. It took a very long time to find the perfect artwork because I wanted my face to portray that feeling.
As an artist, what is the hardest part? And what is the best part?
There are so many aspects to being an artist and running your own brand, it’s a complex question to ask “What is the hardest part and what is the best part?” There are so many amazing things, and there are also things that you sacrifice in order to live under the light of being an artist. It is an immense amount of work, but it is so worth it, it is more worth than what I have done in my whole life. It is exhilarating and meeting everyone is exhilarating, and playing shows is exhilarating, and seeing your music come to life is incredible. And it has the aspect of “party less and works harder”, that’s just how it is, you can’t do it all, you have to work, you have to go where you need to go, it is also a lot of investment early on, but it’s all worth it because you’re believing in something you hope to come true, you hope that everything will go the way it should because when you work hard it will.
How's it like to be a woman in the music industry? What do you want to say to women out there?
Being a non-man in the music industry is a very difficult experience, I think many artists would agree with me, that there are so many challenges to be faced; things that can’t be avoided when you’re in this industry. But I am glad things are getting better. We still need to continue to work on things like increasing safety for women, and overall equality cause at this moment it is still not equal, I had a couple of experiences that have not been favorable because of the fact that I am not a man. You learn to deal with it, and you have to find ways to speak up and go around it. I have spoken to many women in the music industry and the most important thing is to know your worth, to believe you are truly valuable in the music industry, and how proud you can be of yourself to be putting yourself in such a vulnerable position as a woman, and how strong we all are, we are really warriors putting ourselves through all of this.
Why do you make music? What keeps you going?
It’s an internal love and desire to create music, to create art, to create everything I have been creating, a safe space, a community, and that’s not something I ever wanna give up on, ever. It would feel like abandoning everything I believe in, I don’t see myself ever letting go of it, especially now that there is such a community, I would be so sad to go away from all of that. It has been seriously what I lived for, for the last year, it’s been my reason to power through everything, cause it’s just so beautiful and wonderful to see what’s coming alive through these last months and through this whole career.
What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?
One of the biggest things I’ve learned, it is hard to pin it on one thing, but has to be just to forget everything and forget all the limitations that people love to give you. I think that people love to say things have to go a specific way, that there are certain things you can’t do or that building a music career has to go this or that way, that you need to take your time, that it needs to be slow; that you have to put this out first, or you need to do this first; and I think generally that there are no rules, people love to pretend that there are rules, but there aren’t. Everyone has their own journey, everyone has their own fan base that is completely unique, and I think that the most important thing is to follow your gut, and to know what you need to do for yourself, and not to think “Oh what has this person said” or “what is the rule for this, or the rule for that?” Sometimes those rules don’t work in your favour, so not sticking to those things, cause they limit you in so many ways, you’re not going to re-create someone else’s career anyway, so by following someone else’s rules, you are setting yourself up for failure. I think that rule of “throwing away the rulebook and deciding to just make up your own rules for life and your own limits, that just applies to everything in life, not just career, I did speak of it in a career sense, but I think it applies everywhere, I believe there isn’t a specific way anything has to go and you can just decide how you want things to go, usually, the universe will follow and it will put things in place for you.
What advice would you give to anyone struggling with their mental health? And in your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
For those questions, I’d like to answer this way: I can’t pretend to play some type of God and say “These are the things you need to do for your mental health to feel better”, cause that’s not my place and everyone has their own journey, and there are so many things we can work on; but I can’t say one specific thing, so there is no straight answer for either of those both questions, those are very big questions, with very big answers, answers we’re all still finding. I think we’re all, every single day, just trying to be the version of ourselves, basically, every step that we can make to be the best version of ourselves, towards others towards ourselves is kind of the most important thing. And to always know that there is always someone there, that you can seek help, and you can always find others to rely on; if we’re all being kind and being good to others and ourselves, then we know there are people we can rely on. Getting help is so important because it is a step towards being kind to yourself, it is a step to being kinder to everyone around you, because the better you are doing, the better we are all doing, and the better everyone. But I cannot answer these questions like I know everything about the world, cause I am only 19, and I honestly can’t take on my back to give one specific answer, I am still learning, I am still evolving and I am still on my journey. And it’s all happening at the same time. It’s beautiful to be grateful for the things that are around me, to see how beautiful life is actually, and to enjoy what you can even if you’re not feeling great inside, to see still the beautiful things you do have.
