roman around
I’m obsessed with roman around’s new single “Like Me More”. The production is insane, the instrumentation is mind blowing, the drums are crazy, the bass is amazing, roman’s vocals are dreamy and captivating.
“Like Me More” is the kind of songs that I want to keep listening over and over. 4m24 doesn’t even seem enough.
Thank you so much roman for the chat, and thank you for your music.
“Like Me More” is out now !!
Introduce yourselves - what's your story?
Hey, I’m Roman! I live in Fresno, I’m a musician, music teacher, Sagittarius, and student at CSU Fresno.
What did you grow up listening to?
Mainly hip hop, then when I was like 12-13 I started going to hardcore shows. I’d make appearances in the pit and would get hurt haha.
Do you remember a specific time in your life where music made a huge impact?
I remember being 4 years old and being in the car when my dad blasted “Summertime” by DJ jazzy jeff/Will Smith. I don’t know what it was about that particular moment but it was like my life started at that moment.
When did you start making music? What was the biggest challenge when you first started?
I started writing when I was really young, around 11-12. I didn't know what I was doing but I always tried to be as creative as possible.
When did you know you were good at what you were doing?
I’ve always had an ego about what my ideas are but whenever I would present them they would get shut down until 2020 when I started showing my last band my music and some of them started to dig it.
Who was the first person to ever believe in you?
Definitely my first band members. They really pushed me to write more.
"Like Me More" is your latest single - what's the story/inspiration behind this song?
“Like Me More” is about people around me constantly using substances to crutch around. I remember being a kid and being offered drinks and cigarettes by people I looked up to. Many of the people around me that fell into it are dead or have abandoned themselves, so I try to stay away from it as much as I can.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this song? When did you start working on it?
I’m a percussionist so everything I think comes from a rhythm mindset first. Not sure when it started cause it came from like 5 demos combined.
What did you feel when working on this song?
Anger and hopelessness, mainly.
What's your favorite thing about this song?
Probably how tiny and cute the drums sound! Everything is round and cute.
What can you tell us about the artwork?
My partner Chy did the artwork! It represents how I felt as a kid and how I still feel now when people would offer me anything I didn’t want.
What do you want people to feel when listening to this song?
I don’t care, everyone's free to interpret.
What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?
It’s hard to break in and be consistent. It takes a bunch of time to really get real support too. I’d just change how Fresno has no great consistent venues for artists and very few who actually make it out.
Besides music, what are you passionate about?
Education, my students, and my dog.
What message do you want to give to the LGBTQ+ community?
I guess just the world, but donate to every trans person's transition funds :)
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
Better socio-economic conditions for all.
What biggest life lessons have you learned so far?
Everyone you meet knows something you don’t. You’re never better off not knowing something.
What is the thing you are the most proud of?
You!
