earth2zoe
Toronto-based artist earth2zoe has just released her second single titled “ok bye” and it is amazing. “ok bye” has a great storytelling, an astounding production and striking melodies. She delivered a great emotion into this song and that’s the best part about this single as well as the unexpected change of beat towards the end of the song. I think this is brilliant.
It’s only earth2zoe’s second single but she is definitely a promising writer, singer and artist. Happy I got to talk to her :)
“ok bye” is out now !!
Introduce yourself -what's your story?
Hey! I’m earth2zoe. I’m a singer / songwriter from Toronto!! I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember, and I love writing and creating my own music. Writing music allows me to harness my experiences into fuel for my songs, and my lyrics are an intimate narrative of fake friends, peer pressure and finding yourself through the growing pains of adolescence.
When did you start writing songs?
I was about 13 when I started working on my own original stuff. I felt like I was always the outsider growing up and I feel like song writing was an outlet for myself to be creative and talk about real stuff.
When did you know you could sing?
I knew I could sing when I was about 4 years old. I come from a very musical family, so it was just something I was born with. My mom is an incredible singer so there is no denying I can sing because of her.
Growing up, what were your favorite songs to sing along to?
At 6 years old my jam was “Bad day” By Daniel Powter. I knew every word. As I got older, I was heavily influenced by pop music and influenced by what was current on the radio Including artists such as Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish and Halsey.
What gave you the confidence to be an artist and release your original music?
The understanding that knowing when you sing people that hear it are enjoying it really drives the confidence. After that, it’s seeing that others can relate to my lyrics.
"ok bye" is your new single - what's the inspiration behind this song?
The inspiration behind “ok bye” started from a relationship that just didn’t work out. “ok bye” is about that feeling of trying to make a relationship work 1000 different ways, but sometimes it’s for the better to just say ok bye and end things. The feels of being right at that point.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this song? Who helped you create it? When did you start working on it?
I was very lucky to have Ryan Stewart produce this song. we started it super raw and stripped back on a piano, and then I co-wrote the song with Josh Bogert and Ryan stewart. This song just flowed.
What's your favorite thing about this song?
My favourite thing about this song specifically is how vulnerable it is. It’s just one of those songs that could make u cry or that you just get the feels from.
What made you want to release "ok bye" as a single?
I think “ok bye” deserved to be singled out, this song is special to me and there will always be some significant memories attached to this song.
What can you tell us about the artwork?
The artwork for “ok bye” was a variation of my Hallie’s Song artwork. It was a sentimental piece I drew in kindergarten. I figured ok bye was about a boy I don’t like very much hahaha, so it would be cool to make a variation of a boy and keep the X’s over the eyes to symbolize me not liking them very much.
As an artist, what is the hardest part? And what is the best part?
The best part are the ups and the worst parts are the downs Lol there is no better way for me to express this.
What are your thoughts on today's music industry? If you could change one thing, what would it be?
I feel more stuff needs to be based on the music, but social media brings many other factors into play that create unnecessary judgements about artists.
What's the best advice you've ever received?
Stop worrying about what others are doing and focus on what you’re doing. It will only make you as an artist as well as your project better.
Besides music, what are you passionate about?
I’m very passionate about animals! I have a sheepadoodle named snoopy and she’s my favourite thing ever. I’m passionate about mental health and the struggles that come along with it as it’s something I experienced growing up and still do today. I also love all things art, drawing and doing anything creative keeps me busy and inspired.
In your opinion, what would make the world a better place?
Less traffic, cheaper groceries, faster amazon deliveries and free wifi. World peace would be cool too.
What biggest life lessons have you learnt so far?
That one day you can wake up and there can be something like COVID.
