Fionn
I’m very happy to get to feature Fionn once again on my blog. I first interviewed them for the release of their EP Everyone’s a Critic. I never stopped following them and I never stopped listening to their music. I love their versatility, uniqueness and colorful sound.
“Waves” is brilliant. It’s folk and pop. I love guitar tracks and listening to this one made me want to fall in love immediately. The chorus melody is captivating and so beautiful.
“Waves” is probably my favorite Fionn song.

Hi girls ! How are you? What have you been up to since our last conversation?
We’re doing well! We’re Just finishing up our latest album and have a stack of singles that we’re super excited to release!
"Waves" is your latest single - what's the inspiration/story behind this song?
I wrote ‘Waves’ about my constant frustration and disappointment during the pandemic mixed with the realization that life doesn’t turn out exactly as expected. I’ve realized in my few years of adulthood that it’s important to feel out and ride waves of negative emotion in order to stay balanced. It is extremely easy to let runaway thoughts drag you down, but being self aware and getting used to the idea that nothing is ever going to be perfect definitely helps uncover reality and makes moving forward a lot easier.
Could you describe the songwriting/production process for this single? Who helped you create it?
Waves definitely is a song that felt like it wrote itself. I think it had been building up in my subconscious for a while and came out all at once one week when we were in the middle of having daily sessions with our producer Jared Maneirka. I remember writing it one night after we had finished a session and bringing it to Jared the next morning. I wanted the song to feel melancholy and uplifting at the same time.
What's your favorite lyric on "Waves"?
My favorite line is at the end of the chorus. ‘Now I think to breathe when I think nothing goes my way until the thought floats away’.
What made you want to release "Waves" as a single?
When Brianne and I started ‘Fionn’ we started it as a folk/country project. Over the years we have experimented with many different genres but felt excited that ‘Waves’ brought us back to our roots!
What message do you want to deliver through this song?
What I really wanted to say when writing ‘Waves’ was that it's important to accept life’s challenges rather than getting stuck on them.
What can you tell us about your upcoming album?
We have had a lot of fun adding a celtic/folk element back into our music while also keeping pop/rock in the picture! I am proud of the sound we have created alongside our producers Jared Maneirka, Max Cunningham, and Kevvy Maher.
How's it like to be women in the music industry? What advice would you give to women out there?
I have found over the years that women in the music industry do commonly suffer from many insecurities as well as imposter syndrome. My advice would be to notice these feelings and question if they exist because of the struggles of trying to make a career in a male dominated industry.
What biggest life lessons have you learned these past few years?
Because of trying to build a music career during Covid, I have learned to let go of expectations and really just am enjoying my day to day life.
What advice would you give to artists out there?
When making music authenticity is key. I’ve found the most fulfilling part of my career has been speaking my truth and sharing fun stories from Brianne and I’s lives. Each album is like a scrapbook and because of that no matter what the outcome of each album I will always be proud of them!
